GREENSBORO ó A 6.5 percent increase in tuition and fees for UNC Asheville was approved last Friday by the UNC Board of Governors.
As a result, in-state undergraduates at UNCA will be paying $3,824 per year in tuition and fees. The amount does not include costs for room and board, books and other expenses.
The action followed a recommendation for the increase from the UNCA Board of Trustees.
In
October, leaders of the state system agreed to limit tuition increases
to 6.5 percent a year for the next four years for in-state
undergraduates. However, some fees were exempt from the cap, allowing
the total increrase to exceed the limit.
As for other Western North Carolina universities, the state board
approved a 9 percent tuition and fee increase at Western Carolina
University in Cullowee, to $3,950; and a 5.2 percent boost at
Appalachian State University in Boone, to $4,184.
WCUís jump in tuition and fees includes a new debt service fee of $113
per year that will enable the university to begin construction of a
modern dining facility to replace Dodson Cafeteria, which was built in
1966.
Other increases approved by the board of governors include the following:
ï 9.5 perecent at East Carolina University to $4,181.
ï 6.9 percent at N.C. State University to $5,002.
ï 6.2 percent at UNC Chapel Hill to $5,176.
ï 5.7 percent at UNC Charlotte to $3,978.
