Despite a furious second-half comeback effort by Charleston Southern, UNC Asheville held on for a 53-40 victory in menës basketball last Saturday afternoon at the Justice Center.
Leading 30-17 at halftime, UNCA (7-14, 3-4) made only seven field goals in the second half.
Charleston Southern (5-16, 0-7) suffered turnovers on three of its first four possessions of the second half, but then netted eight consecutive points to narrow the deficit to three points. With four minutes left, the Bucaneers trailed 46-40.
Neither team scored a field goal in the final four minutes, but the Bulldogs made enough free throws to win by 13 points.
The defeat was
the 13th in a row for Charleston Southern, which registered 12
turnovers and only seven baskets in the first half. The hapless Bucs
finished with 20 turnovers and shot 33 percent from the field
(16-of-48).
In turn, UNCA
suffered through 13 consecutive possessions without scoring a point ǃÓ
over eight minutes from late in the first half to early in the second
half.
Leading the
Bulldogs was guard Bryan Smithson, who hit 17 points and netted his
teamës only three field goals in the final 10 minutes; and freshman
guard Donovan Jones, who came off the bench to score 14 points and nab
five steals.
