Hot-shooting Keydets beat Bulldogs with their defense

ropelled Virginia Military Institute to a 102-97 victory over UNC Asheville in Big South Conference menës basketball at the Justice Center on Monday night.

The Keydetsë Travis Holmes, a former Christ School standout, leaped from the middle of the lane, causing Bulldogs guard Bryan Smithson to alter the arc ÇƒÓ and miss ÇƒÓ on his potential game-tying 3-pointer.

VMIës Reggie Williams tipped the rebound to Matt Murrer, who sealed the win with a dunk.

Williams finished with 34 points to lead VMI (9-12, 2-3) to its second BSC road win in four seasons. The Keydets, the nationës top-scoring team, hit 36-of-85 shots from the floor (42 percent), including 13-of-43 3-pointers (30 percent).

UNCA (6-14, 2-4) shot 51 percent from the floor and held a 56-39 rebounding edge. However, the Bulldogs missed 13 free throws and suffered a season-high 29 turnovers under VMIës full-court pressure.

Leading the Bulldogs were Joey Harrell, 21 points; and Sean Smith, 15 points, both of whom registered career highs. Also chipping in was freshman guard Donovan Jones, who netted 13 points and 10 rebounds.

About 30 students and faculty from Christ School attended the game to see alumni Travis Holmes and Chavis Holmes play for VMI. Both excelled. Travis finished with 17 points, six assists and seven steals to boost his season total to 79, which leads the nation. Chavis netted 13 points.
