The Daily Planet’s Opinion: Shame on Calif. Gov. Newsom for insulting audience in a failed attempt to relate to majority-black city voters ... as if they’re children... by claiming ‘I’m (slow) like you’ ... ‘a 960 SAT guy’

In a stunningly ham-fisted attempt to appeal to a a predominantly black audience in Atlanta, Ga., California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) revealed what he really thinks about black voters through comments he made during a Feb. 22 program.

Specifically, Newsom’s comments were voiced during an event featuring a discussion between him and Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens at a book tour stop promoting his memoir, “Young Man in a Hurry: A Memoir of Discovery.”

Newsom’s speech at the Rialto Center for the Arts reportedly led people to speculate that he is soft-launching a 2028 presidential bid.

“However, his aspirations for higher office may have taken a hit after he made some tone-deaf remarks in Atlanta, unknowingly disparaging his audience in an attempt to relate to them,” Rebeka Zeliko wrote in Blaze Media on Feb. 23.

Regarding “the context,” AI Overview on Feb. 26 stated, “While attempting to connect with the audience by discussing his personal struggles with dyslexia and academic challenges, Newsom stated, ‘I’m like you’ and ‘I’m a 960 SAT guy.’”

In “the reaction,” AI Overview noted, “These remarks sparked significant backlash from conservative critics who accused him of using ‘bigotry of low expectations’ and talking down to the audience, while Newsom’s team defended the comments as ‘MAGA-manufactured outrage.’”

In the aftermath, some public figures like Nicki Minaj (aka “The Queen of Rap”) accused Newsom of “talking down” to black voters by equating low academic scores with their experience. She “took to X to dismantle Newsom’s tone-deaf statements, shredding him for speaking to black voters “as if they’re children,” Zeliko reported in Blaze Media.

“His way of bonding with black ppl is to tell them how stupid he is & that he can’t read,” Minaj said. “This means my first read on him was correct. He’s been handed so many things & put in high positions he never earned or deserved.”

Instead of Newsom, we recommend the common-sense moderate U.S. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., for the the Democrats’ presidential nominee.
