From Staff Reports

NEWBERRY, S.C. — The Chairmen of the Board, an iconic Carolina beach music vocal group, with a six-member band, will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. March 7 in the Newberry Opera House, 1201 McKibben St., here.

Regarding the show, a promotion stated, “With a name synonymous with soul music excellence, Chairmen of the Board has been captivating audiences for over five decades.

“Originally formed in Detroit and signed by Motown legends Holland/Dozier/Holland to their Invictus label, the group quickly soared to fame with the 1970 hit ‘Give Me Just a Little More Time.’ (The record sold more than a million copies.)

“Led by the unforgettable vocals of General Johnson, the group’s early catalog delivered classic soul anthems like ‘(You’ve Got Me) Dangling on a String,’ ‘Pay to the Piper’ and ‘Everything’s Tuesday,’ cementing their legacy as one of R&B’s most beloved acts.

“Following the passing of General Johnson in 2010, longtime member Ken Knox — who performed alongside Johnson for nearly 40 years — continues to honor that legacy, keeping the music alive with a fresh lineup and vibrant performances.

“With hits that still resonate around the world and recent successes like ‘Reach Out 2 Me’ topping the UK Soul Charts, Chairmen of the Board remains a powerful force in live music.

“As inductees of the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, their influence spans generations, blending nostalgia with timeless soul for fans old and new.”
