Eagles rip apart Bulldogs as comeback effort fails

ROCK HILL, S.C. ÇƒÓ Winthrop University throttled UNC Asheville 61-42 in Big South Conference menës basketball this past Monday night.

Winthrop (14-4, 4-0), the defending BSC champion, jumped out to a 31-13 lead with 6:22 left in the first half.

However, UNCA, fueled by two 3-pointers by Reid Augst, rallied to cut the deficit to nine at the intermission.


The Bulldogs (5-13, 1-3) continued to fight back early in the second half, slicing the Eaglesë lead to 36-31. However, Winthrop staged a 11-0 run and UNCA wilted, resulting in the 19-point final margin.

UNCA, which scored only 15 second-half points, was led by Augst, who netted eight points; and Donovan Jones, with seven points.

For the night, the Bulldogs hit a paltry 14-of-44 shots for 31 percent ÇƒÓ and 4-or-18 shooting ÇƒÓ 22 percent ÇƒÓ on 3-pointers.


Winthrop was led by Taj McCullough, who finished with 12 points; Phillip Williams, 11 points; and Craig Bradshaw, 10 points.


The Eagles won the battle of the boards handily, with a 41-23 advantage, and outscored the Bulldogs 26-4 in the paint.


Winthrop was picked to win the BSC title for the third consecutive year. The Eagles victory over the Bulldogs marked their four straight blowout victory in league play.


Next, UNCA will visit Radford for a tip-off at 7 p.m. Thursday.
