The Daily Planet's Opinion: 3 cheers for ‘old-school liberal’ pundit who sparks outrage from ‘wokesters’ with his dry analysis
Monday, 12 January 2026 08:35

Much to his credit, “old-school liberal” commentator Bill Maher, as of late December, is facing backlash for several recent comments regarding younger generations, his evolving political stance on Donald Trump, and a high-profile feud with Dave Chappelle.

His controversies as of early January are the following:

• “Age-Inappropriate” Golden Bachelor Pitch: In late December, Maher drew criticism for pitching a version of “The Golden Bachelor,” where he would date 20-year-old women. He stated his goal would be to “straighten out” their lives and that they would likely “leave crying” due to his bluntness.

• Backlash Over “Therapy Culture:” Maher was recently criticized for ridiculing the use of “therapy language” and what he describes as “fragility” in younger generations. Critics argued his comments were out of touch with modern understandings of trauma and mental health.

• Dave Chappelle Feud: Following a Dec. 19 Netflix special, Dave Chappelle lashed out at Maher, calling his commentary “smug” and “cracker-(expletive deleted).” The beef stems from Maher’s October criticism of Chappelle’s performance at a comedy festival in Saudi Arabia, where Maher disputed Chappelle’s claim that there is more freedom of speech in Saudi Arabia than in the U.S.

• Accusations of Racism: In late December, Maher responded to claims of racism from The Young Turks’ founder Cenk Uygur, who called Maher the “biggest racist in American media” following a debate over the Israel-Palestine conflict. Maher countered that his critics are “morons” because Islam is an ideology, not a race. (The Young Turks is a major progressive online news network known as the “world’s largest online news show.”)

Alas, Maher’s recent move toward a more conciliatory tone regarding President Donald Trump has led to friction with his longtime liberal peers as follows:

• Larry David Fallout: In December, it was confirmed that Maher and Larry David are no longer friends after David mocked Maher’s April 2025 dinner with Trump in an op-ed titled “My Dinner with Adolf.”

• “Trump Whisperer” Comments: On a Dec. 29 episode of his “Club Random” podcast, “Maher claimed he could be a ‘Trump Whisperer’ and argued that the country would be better off if more people like him spoke to the president,” AI Overview noted.

We often disagree with Maher on issues, but we cheer his willingness to position himself as an independent truth-teller who is critical of not only the far-right, but is critical of the often overly-sensitive far-left as well.
