UNCAës 7-7 center excels in 84-77 win over Liberty

UNC Ashevilleës 7-7 center Kenny George sparkled in his home debut as he led the Bulldogs to an 84-77 win over Liberty University in the Big South Conference opener for both menës basketball teams last Saturday at the Justice Center.

George, a sophomore from Chicago who has been hampered by knee problems since arriving at UNCA last season, has appeared in six road games for the Bulldogs this year.

The win snapped a five-game losing streak for UNCA (5-10, 0-1). The Bulldogs scored the last 10 points of the first half to lead 37-18 at intermission. The Flames hit two 3-pointers in the final seconds to cut the final margin to single digits.


George, the NCAAës tallest player, finished with eight points on perfect shooting (4-for-4) from the field in 14 minutes. Two of his baskets were netted on flat-footed dunks. In addition, George blocked seven shots and grabbed seven rebounds.

Four Bulldogs finished in double figures, with three others netting eight points each. Garrett Moles netted 10 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double. His production also made him the first UNCA cager to snare 10 rebounds in a game this season. Also standing out was freshman guard Donovan Jones, who scored eight points, including two 3-pointers for the Bulldogs

Despite winning, UNCA committed 24 turnovers.


The loss was the eighth in a row for Liberty (6-9, 0-1) and its 20th consecutive road defeat.
