Coastal Carolina staged a late scoring surge to secure a 68-60 Big South Conference victory over UNC Asheville in menës basketball Monday night at the Justice Center.

Despite holding a razor-thin 52-51 lead with 6:50 left, Coastal Carolina (8-6, 2-0) erupted on a 14-5 scoring run to clinch the win. Senior Moses Sonko scored five points in a 30-second span in the final minutes. In the meantime, UNCA (5-11, 1-1) scored on just two of 11 offensive possessions.

Coached by former Asheville High star Buzz Peterson, the Chanticleers are 4-0 against the Bulldogs in his two seasons at the helm.

Leading Coastal Carolina were Soko, with 17 points; forward Joseph Harris, who netted 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds; and freshman point guard Joshua Mack, who scored 16 points, including four 3-pointers.

UNCA was led by freshman Sean Smith, who came off the bench to score 14 points; Bryan Smithson, 11 points; and K.J. Garland, 10 points and eight assists.

Meanwhile, Kenny George, UNCAës 7-7 center, netted four points with one rebound and no blocked shots in 10 minutes of play.

Next, UNCA will travel for three straight BSC games, beginning Saturday at High Point. The Bulldogs will travel to league champion Winthrop on Monday and wind up the trip on Jan. 18 at Radford University.
