Lenoir-Rhyne upsets UNCA 81-78 in first home game

Josh Rudder scored 22 points to lead Division II Lenoir-Rhyne to an 81-78 upset win over UNC Asheville last Wednesday night in men??s basketball at the Justice Center.
The Bulldogs (0-3) were led in their first home game by Brett Warner and Matt Day, who each had a career-high 14 points. Joseph Barber chipped in 13 points, followed by Omar Collington??s 12 points.

Leading the Bears was Reggie Bratton, who scored 18 points. Eric Mauldin added 11 points, all in the second half.

Asheville lost, despite shooting 50 percent from the field (30-of-60) and out-rebounding Lenoir-Rhyne 49-31.

The Bears (2-2) went on a 15-4 run midway through the second half to build a 77-71 lead as Mauldin sank a trey at the 2:27 mark.

Asheville fought back and closed to 77-76 on a three-point play from Warner and a lay-up from Joey Harrell with 1:05 left.

But Bratton hit a jumper in the lane with 47 seconds left to put LRC in front 79-76. Two free throws from Collington narrowed the lead to 79-78.

Bratton put the Bears in front 81-78 with two free throws at the 17-second mark. UNCA??s last-second three-pointers missed and Lenoir-Rhyne escaped with the victory.
