From Staff Reports

NEWTON, S.C. — The Charleston-based Ranky Tanky — an American musical ensemble — will perform in concert at 8 p.m. Jan. 18 in the Newberry Opera House, 1201 McKibben St., here.

Regarding the show, a promotion noted, “Ranky Tanky revives the soulful sounds of Gullah culture, with their vibrant blend of jazz, blues, gospel and R&B, creating an uplifting and engaging musical experience that honors their rich heritage.”

As for the Gullah culture, it “originated among descendants of enslaved Africans in the Low Country region” of the Southeast, Wikipedia reported.

A separate promotion added, “Apart from lead vocalist Quiana Parler, four of the group’s members — Quentin Baxter, Kevin Hamilton, Clay Ross and Charlton Singleton — previously played together in the Charleston jazz quartet The Gradual Lean in the late 1990s.”

The name “Ranky Tanky” comes from a Gullah expression roughly translated as “get funky,” Wikipedia stated.
