ORANGEBURG, S.C. ÇƒÓ South Carolina State University scored on a Brian Mason baseline jumper with 1.7 seconds left to stun UNC Asheville 79-77 in menës basketball last Thursday night at Smith-Middleton Arena.
Trailing 68-55 with nine minutes left, UNCA (4-8) staged a gritty comeback to tie the game, only to lose in the finals seconds for the second time this season. (Earlier this year, UNCA lost 77-76 at Duquesne on two free throws with 1.9 seconds left.)
UNCA
was led by Vicent James and K.J. Garland, who scored 22 points each;
Bryan Smithson, who netted 11 points and dished five assists; and Reid
Augst, who scored 13 points off the bench.
In a game that
pitted two teams with Bulldogs as their nickname, S.C. State (3-7) was
led to victory by Mason, who scored 23 points.
Also chipping in for S.C. State were Julius Carter, 16 points; and Jason Flagler, who netted 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
UNCA will wrap
up its current road trip this week with visits to the University of
South Carolina at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and the University of Louisville
at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Following a
break for New Yearës, the UNCA menës squad will return to action at
4:30 p.m. Jan. 6, when it plays host to Liberty University in the
Justice Center on campus.
