BLACK MOUNTAIN ÇƒÓ The Town of Black Mountain will likely see a number of capital improvements over the next few years, as the Board of Aldermen unanimously approved a draft Capital Improvement Plan for 2007-2012 at its Dec. 11 meeting.
The CIP covers any project that the town seeks to undertake that will cost more than $5,000, according to Assistant Town Manager Bo Ferguson.
However, approval of the draft plan does not commit the town to all of the projects listed, he noted. Rather, it is a statement of interest in pursuing the items in the plan, Ferguson told the Daily Planet in a phone interview Dec. 12.
Among
the improvements listed in the CIP are repairs to the townës aging
swimming pool, totaling more than a million dollars over the next
several years.
Additionally,
the plan calls for $44,000 to be allocated in fiscal 2007-08 to replace
the roof on the Grey Eagle Arena, which has been leaking water despite
being fixed numerous times, according to town staff.
The board also
set Jan. 8 for a public hearing on the proposed improvements. The
entire text of the CIP can be read at the townës Web site,
www.townofblackmountain.org.
In other action, the board:
ï Heard a report about the start of construction on sidewalks along U.S. 70.
The town
approved the construction project in its most recent operating budget,
authorizing $162,250 to pave a section of the highway from Cragmont
Road to Blue Ridge Road. Construction began two weeks ago.
A number of
businesses and neighborhoods are located nearby and many residents have
expressed concerns about the lack of sidewalks along the busy road.
Meanwhile, the
North Carolina Department of Transportation has indicated that it will
likely contribute to a second phase of the project, paving sidewalks
from Old U.S. 70 to Blue Ridge Road.
ï Announced that it will begin streaming videos of its meetings on the townës Web site.
The new service is a collaboration between the town, Buncombe County and Black Mountain Video Productions.
The county will host the footage on its Web page, though a link to the clips can be downloaded at www.townofblackmountain.org.
The videos will be available each Thursday following the boardës monthly meetings.
