Tuesday, 12 December 2006 18:53
With K.J. Garland leading the charge, UNC Asheville gunned down Division II Tusculum College 84-66 in menës basketball last Saturday in the Justice Center.

Garland, a junior guard, netted 26 points on 12-of-17 shooting, and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds.
Other Bulldogs scoring in double figures included Vincent James, 12; Joey Harrell, 11, Bryan Smithson, 11; and C.J. Walker, 10 points.

Smithson, UNCAës leading scorer, sat out the second half with a leg injury. However, coach Eddie Biedenbach said after the game that Smithson injury was not serious and that he could have played in the second half, if the game was close. However, UNCA played so well that the coach was able to rest his star.

The Bulldogs finished with 10 steals and forced 19 turnovers against the Pioneers, who led the South Atlantic Conference in shooting percentage and shooting percentage defense. Tusculum (5-2) was held to 38.5 percent shooting from the field, while shooting 50.8 percent.

For UNCA (4-5), the win marked a going-away gift for the holidays, as the Bulldogs ended a home-stand. Loomings is a five-game road trip that begins at 2 p.m. Saturday at UNC Chapel Hill and ends at Louisville with a tip-off at 1 p.m. Dec. 30.

On the trip, the Bulldogs also will visit East Tennessee at 7 p.m. next Tuesday, South Carolina State at 7 p.m. Dec. 21 and South Carolina at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 28.
