From Staff Reports
HENDERSONVILLE — The Henderson County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 5 voted unanimously to spend $40,000 for the creation of a nine-hole disc golf course and a walking trail at East Flat Rock Park.
In spring 2023, the commissioners purchased an additional 13-1/2 acres adjoining the the existing park, which is Henderson’s newest. That purchase gave the county space for the disc golf course and walking trail, according to a Feb. 7 report in the Hendersonville Lightning.
The commissioners were presented with the plans for the disc golf course and a walking trail (which will connect to existing paths, creating a trail spanning slightly more than a mile) — by Bruce Gilliam, director of the Henderson County Parks & Recreation Department.
“The project is expected to cost $40,000,†Gilliam said, adding that “much of the work can be done in-house,†the Lightning noted.
East Flat Rock Park is located on the east end of East Flat Rock on U.S. 176. The park covers an area of 7.93 acres.
Making the motion to approve the spending request for the project was Commissioner David Hill, who noted “that the project should not require much site work.â€
In other action, the commissioners:
• Unanimously approved the guaranteed maximum price for the Third Transfer Station Bay project for $4,024,536 and SCS Engineers’ fee of $204,100 and directed staff to secure a loan for the total estimated project cost of $10 million.
• Authorized county staff to find a larger place to hold a meeting with farmers in Henderson. To that end, Commissioner Bill Lapsley said that “he thought the board should host another meeting after an overflow crowd of farmers packed the Steve Wyatt Auditorium†at Blue Ridge Commmunity College the previous week, the Lightning reported. “Commissioners discussed a larger auditorium or gym as a possible location for the next farmers’ meeting.â€
• Recognized the Hendersonville High School women’s tennis team for winning a fifth consecutive state championship.
• Authorized Henderson Sheriff Lowell S. Griffin to present the service badge and sidearm as a token of appreciation to Lt. Jason Garren, who recently retired.
