Letters to the Editor Merrimon 'hot mess' stories praised, but questions raised
Wednesday, 07 December 2022 12:05

Hello, I very much appreciate your (Daily Planet) articles on the Merrimon “hot mess” – I am a North Asheville resident and very much against it, too, for all the reasons you cited.

If you run another article we should try to get others interviewed. I know Sydney (Bach) and he’s wonderful, but we need more than just him for credibility.

Also, I’d love (and so would the public) to know WHY AoB (Asheville on Bikes which bills itself as “Asheville’s only bike advocacy group”) has so much pull with the city.

Why we are all listening to Mike Sule (AoB’s executive director)??

Something is not right there. That is the million-dollar question!

‘Election-deniers?’ Why not put spotlight on ‘vote-deniers?

Since trending news is “election-deniers,” why not run a spin on “vote-deniers?”

There’s no doubt this (midterm) election was wonky —  just look at the facts.

Have we learned anything seeing protesters with signs — in the news — really wanting to vote, but couldn’t?

Can we say ballot shortages was a problem and yet voters made the trip to stand in line in-person, an older tradition versus the mail-in — and are turned away excuse is “no ballots,” so didn’t get extended hours as if their time isn’t valuable ... like “sorry folks, park’s closed, Griswalds!”

What about all these voting machine clichés to paper errors?

Surely we have the technology, Steve Austin (aka “The Six Million Dollar Man”)?

What about those folks who went to voting stations that weren’t even there?

Does this seem like voting denied?

Then look at the early results in the news stating the percentages win out of the votes remaining.

I saw Democrat wins called early — and the percentages left out to be counted, but not so with Republicans.

Then People magazine called the  Republicans’ taking of the House early this morning (Nov. 16), but then, not until late afternoon do a few other news (outlets).

Check out articles on voter denials to just “voting gone wild.” It’s like some sitcom.

It’s not like the election wasn’t foreseen.

It wasn’t like we had no time for places to get more staff to count these votes.

It wasn’t like a few minor glitches — and all it shows us is that our voting methods aren’t reliable.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following letter to the editor was sent to the Daily Planet in response to a letter that appeared in the newspaper’s last edition (Nov. 23-Dec. 6) and was headlined, “Ooops! She did it again! GOP leaders must discipline Amy Churchill for disloyalty.” That letter was written by Jim Fulton, an Asheville resident and member of the First Tuesday Conservatives.

Follow the process, BCGOP chair asks party constituents

Sometimes political leadership is a difficult and thankless job.

There are many viewpoints shared and often there are many viewpoints not shared within any party.

However, it is imperative that all viewpoints are heard.

Everyone believes their perspective is right, otherwise why hold that perspective.

Anyone in a leadership role must represent all viewpoints within their party. No single opinion holds more weight than any other.

When outside opinions take on a Monday Morning Quarterback approach, things change.

It is easy to take on no responsibility, yet call into question other people’s decisions. It is also easy to have opinions without facts.

Nothing productive occurs without conversation and communication.

If you never ask why, how do you know or understand?

When civil discourse is abandoned, nothing productive gets accomplished. Sometimes the squeaky wheel doesn’t get the grease.

Any organization that operates with an elected board is required to follow a plan of organization.

They are each elected to their respective positions and serve to support and lead the entire party. There will be disagreements, but at the end of the day, we must all work together toward our common goals.

The BCGOP is well-aware of issues being brought forth at this time.

Due diligence is always of the utmost importance in any situation — and we are moving forward with this process as efficiently as possible.

We ask our constituents for time to complete this process in full before our next meeting.

Testosterone deficiency by local camp? â€˜The Take Off!’ held anyway!

First of all, let me report how happy I was with the responses of complete joy when I showed a group of some 30 of my babies the Baltimore Ravens- Jacksonville Jaguars NFL Football Flyover, now being called "The Take Off!”

They have been so down in spirit of late, watching street names, military bases, cenotaph destruction and anything depicting Southern heritage destroyed.

My sister, who, too, looked on, let out a yell of joy that I am now calling a "New Rebel Yell.”

I have retrieved hundreds of emails asking me to thank the Sons and Daughters of the Confederacy for finally taking the offense against the total beat down of our heritage and Southern pride. They were somewhat disappointed to learn that it was neither organization.

Far too many of our young and old citizenry have come to believe, especially that our Southern men have become testosterone-deficient, as they lick the boots of politicians, poverty pimps, DNA traitors, and haters of our homeland and heritage.

And so many blacks are incensed that Southern blacks are being used as the weapon of choice against our homeland, while the voices of their ancestors who were loyal to the efforts and actions taken to defend their homeland — "the Southland of America” — go unnoticed.

It is always "slavery" depicting the South as an evil entity that fought to maintain the worldwide economic institution of slavery in America… the false narrative of those who truly hate us.

And what can only be described as joy was so-short-lived when I shared with them the letter of response (appearing later in this letter) by Calvin Hart, who can only be described as a testosterone-deficient leader, posing to carry out “the Charge of Confederate Veterans” to defend the Confederate soldiers’ good name.

Please note that the honorable David McCalliser, an SSH leader, WAS NOT asked to “stand down,” but he did refer Cmdr. Hart, on the Wednesday before the Flyover, to Kirk D. Lyons, exective director of Save Southern Heritage, who he DID NOT CONTACT.

Gentlemen of the SCV:

I am writing you in reference to the recent flyover that was conducted at the Jaguar-Raven football game in Jacksonville on Sunday, November 27, 2022.

Please know that the Florida Division Sons of Confederate Veterans or the local camp Kirby-Smith Camp 1209 were not involved in the prior planning or actual flying of the plane during the event. We were not even given the courtesy of letting the Camp or Division know that this fly over was being planned,

In fact, when we learned of Save Southern Heritage’s plan thru an email sent to a member requesting money to finance the endeavor to conduct the flyover.

I contacted David McCallister, to ask that they not conduct the flyover. While we support the flying of our Confederate flag (we fly the Confederate flag 365 days of the year in Kirby-Smith Confederate Park beside I-295), we asked them not to do the flyover, as we had just recently put to bed the issue of the “Women of the Southern Confederacy” monument in Jacksonville.

We viewed the flyover as an unnecessary provocation of the politicians in the area. Additionally, we had been working with the city to be given the Soldier’s Statute that had been removed from Hemming Plaza in downtown Jacksonville, to place it in Camp Mooney Confederate Cemetery that Kirby-Smith Camp #1209 owns. The Save Southern Heritage’s response was,“Not everything is about Kirby-Smith!”

So, to reiterate, the local camp asked Save Southern Heritage not conduct the flyover, as we knew the local political situation. We have been boots on the ground for three years at city council meetings and attend several city council members functions, stating our position on the Confederate monuments.

Save Southern Heritage refused our request and conducted the flyover, despite our pleas. As a result of their actions, the media and politicians are once again talking of removing the “Women’s” monument. The city representative whom we addressed about the “Soldier’s” monument has now told us they will not take up the matter until after the next mayoritorial election.

The Jacksonville Times Union (a liberal rag) has front page article today fueling the opposition and mayor against the monuments that we hold so dear. Where is Save Southern Heritage now?  Will they fund the defense of this local monument?  Will they foot the financial cost to try to get the City of Jacksonville to leave our monument as it is?  I believe that we know the answer to these questions.  They literally came in our area, stirred up trouble for the local camp, burned bridges built over years within the city and then left – back to Tampa and North Carolina.  If we lose this monument now, we can all thank the leadership of Save Southern Heritage for their refusal to see the forest for the trees.

God Save the South!

The children wanted to know if this Hart was the same person who, at a Sons of Confederate Veterans reunion, had demanded that I leave the room where the Sons were gathering — and with whom I had chosen to take the high road, while awaiting an apology ... that so many had proclaimed he would give me....

And one (an apology) that I, a renowned defender of Southern heritage, would never receive from this self-centered man who chooses to beat down on those who have answered the call against those who have declared war upon our homeland once again.

And I know these words are not what my mother in Heaven would have wanted me to use in describing Hart. However, he — like Ginger Rudiger, Ty Sidule, Mimi Elrod and Nikki Haley — bends the knee before those who choose to attack the honor of a patriotic people and their good names and the stand they make against the tyranny that mirrors the same made against their ancestors.

I, like many other sons and daughters of former slaves who are members of Save Southern Heritage, applaud their efforts and actions. And, like my babies, would say “thanks.” God bless you!
