No. 3 Gators annihilate Catamounts 62-0 in football
GAINESVILLE, Fla. ÇƒÓ Third-ranked Florida stomped Western Carolina University 62-0 in football last Saturday.
The season-ending loss also was the ninth defeat in a row for WCU (2-9) in a mismatch that pitted a Division 1-A powerhouse against an injury-riddled Division 1-AA team.
The Gators (10-1) scored on nine of their first 10 possessions in a tuneup for this weekendës storied rivalry with Florida State.
Despite
Floridaës celebration of Senior Day, a number of freshmen got a chance
to shine, including quarterback Tim Tebow, who ran for two touchdowns
and threw for two more. Tebo was 10-of-12 passing for 200 yards. He ran
for 47 yards.
Meanwhile,
Tebowës classmate, running back Brandon James, broke the school record
for punt return yardage, returning six punts for 155 yards and scoring
on a 77-yarder.
For the
Catamounts, Andy Horn made his first career start at quarterback, but
was overwhelmed by Florida, finishing 5-of-12 for 35 yards.
Next year, WCU will face two other top Southeastern Conference teams ÇƒÓ Alabama and Georgia.
Duquesne rallies to edge
UNCA 77-76 in basketball

Despite squandering a nine-point lead, Duquesne rallied to nip UNC
Asheville 77-76 in menës basketball last Saturday night.
Duquesne (2-0),
fielding just eight scholarship players, won on two free throws by
freshman Scott Grote, who then stole an inbounds pass to secure the
win. Grote was one of four first-year starters for a team that lost
five players in shootings in September.Grote finished 6-of-7 at the
line.
With one more
win, Duquesne, which finished 3-24 last season ÇƒÓ its worst record in
school history, would match last seasonës total.
Leading UNCA (1-2) was 6-10 Brett Warner, who netted 16 points; Sean Smith, 14; Bryan Smithson, 13; and Reid Augst, 11.
After 30 years, WCU returns to dismantle UNCA 61-46
Western Carolina
University ripped UNC Asheville 61-46 in menës basketball on Nov. 14 in
the Catamountsë first visit to the Justice Center since 1976.
UNCA (1-1) shot
poorly in the first half, hitting 5-of-26 shots, its worst point
production on a half since scoring only seven against Clemson in the
1979-80 season. The Bulldogs shot 19.2 percent in the first period and
30.6 percent for the game. UNCA trailed 25-11 at the intermission.
Leading the Bulldogs in scoring was junior transfer Bryan Smithson, who netted 13 points.
Fortunately for
UNCA, WCU (1-0) also shot poorly in the first half, hitting just
8-of-27 shots. However, freshman forward Nick Aldridge kept the
Catamounts comfortably ahead, scoring 15 points in the first half.
Aldridge finished the game with 17 points and nine rebounds.
