The Daily Planet's Opinion: It’s time to phase out trade with China, our No. 1 enemy
Wednesday, 17 August 2022 13:45

Now is the time — and we are the people — to step up and begin the long-needed phase-out of the trade of goods and services between the United States and China.

We also should encourage the rest of the Free World to do the same, as fast-rising China (operated as a dictatorship by the Chinese Communist Party) has proven it is not only bad, but evil.

On its present course, it will soon overtake America as the world’s top economic and military power, which would be horrific for freedom-lovers everywhere.

To that end, we propose that the U.S. —  through an immediate vote of Congress — cut trade with China by 50 percent in the first 12 months.

After that, we recommend decreasing trade by 5 percent per year over 10 years until there is zero trade between the U.S. and China.

The 50 percent trade reduction in the first year is intended as a signal to China — as well as to potential U.S. domestic manufacturers — that we mean business and to give our entrepreneurs a sense of security that our government will not renege on this opportunity to rebuild our manufacturing base and to fix other systemic problems as well.

The trade reduction could be managed by raising tariffs on Chinese goods and services intended for import to the U.S.

Why take such drastic action?

While we back free trade, we also agree with proponents of the Austrian School of Economics that free trade isn’t free if there’s no level playing field — and there never will be one with a truly nasty nation controlled by the Chinese Communist Party.

Worldwide (and especially in the U.S.), China is well-known (and despised for) dumping products — built by the CCP’s slave labor — below cost, driving competitors out and allowing China then to gain a monopoly and then jack up prices.

We proponents of free enterprise are dealing with a tyranical communist monopoly. And free enterprise is not coercion, as practiced by China. Instead, free enterprise thrives on the ability of people and entities to trade however they want — without government intrusion

As for the CCP,  it wouldn’t be where it is (on the cusp of surpassing the U.S. as the world’s leading superpower) without exerting its fascist communist totalitarian control.

China has taken over a high percentage of the world’s manufacturing base, using the most vile tactics, including slave labor and copycatting everything and reproducing it cheaper to dominate market share in countless categories.

As a result, the U.S. exists now just as a service economy. Tragically, America really doesn’t seem to produce anything anymore.

In stark contrast, China has been single-focused, dedicated, committed and methodical, knowing it could eventually prevail over us as the leading world power because the CCP had a clear plan.

During the same period, the U.S. just got lazy, with Americans seemingly quite satisfied to buy China’s easy, cheap, plastic junk at below-market prices.

If we continue on the current course, the CCP will own us because the U.S. will be totally dependent upon — and vulnerable to — China.

It is the time to boldly take “The Road Not Taken” to prevent China from taking over the U.S. and the world — and the way to do that is by stopping trade with China... now!

As the iconic American poet Robert Frost wrote in “The Road Not Taken” in 1915:

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I —
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”
