The granddaughter of Tryon native and late singer extraordinaire Nina Simone is accusing Vice President Kamala Harris of “taking away” the legendary singer’s estate and handing it over “to white people” — leaving her so poor that she is considering “stripping to pay my bills,” according to a June 20 story in the New York Post. 

RéAnna Simone Kelly, Simone’s 22-year-old granddaughter, tweeted on June 19 the following:

 â€œNina’s granddaughter here. My family doesn’t run her estate anymore. It was taken away from us & given to white people. Our family name was DRAGGED in the media. We get NO royalties, nothing. Wanna hold someone accountable? Ask Kamala Harris why she came for my family.” 

Simone Kelly’s mother later said she supported her daughter “1,000 percent” in “speaking the truth of our family,” the Post added.

The 2013 legal battle over Simone’s estate’s handling occurred when Harris was California’s attorney general.

In a lengthy thread, Simone Kelly also asserted the following:

“Ask her why she (Harris) separated my family. Ask her why my grandmothers estate is in SHAMBLES now. Ask her why we as her family no longer own the rights to anything.

“Ask her why she bullied my mother in court and my mom almost killed herself from the depression.”

Meanwhile, TMZ reported that a close associate of Simone’s defended Harris’ actions — and said she followed Simone’s final wishes.
