Dramatically, Brevard College wins 1st game

MURFREESBORO ÇƒÓ With dramatic flare, Brevard College won its first football game in 56 years by edging Chowan College 10-5 last Saturday.

The Tornados staged a successful, last-minute goal-line stand to secure their first-ever NCAA victory.

Earlier, with 30 seconds remaining, the Hawks downed a 40-yard pass to set up a first-and-goal from the BC 2. Brevard then stopped Chowan on four consecutive downs, but a pass interference call gave the Hawks a fifth try. However, BCës win was sealed when former Pisghah High standout Butch Bridges tackled quarterback Randy Gilbert at the goal line with nine seconds remaining. Chowan had no timeouts left.

BC (1-5), which reinstated football this season after a 56-year lapse, is fielding a team comprised mostly of true freshmen.

While Chowan scored first on a field goal in the first quarter, BC battled back to take the lead 7-3 on a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Will Cox to Michael Moore.

In the third quarter, the Hawks recorded a safety to cut the Tornadosë lead to 7-5. However, BCës Brendan Frazer kicked a 26-yard field goal with 11 minutes left for the final points of the game.

Next, BC will conclude its season with a visit to LaGrange College in LaGrange, Ga., at 1 p.m. Saturday

No. 2 ASU tops Wofford,
keeps home streak alive

BOONE ÇƒÏ No. 2 Appalachian State University needed just two first-quarter touchdowns and another superb defensive effort to extend its home winning streak to 22-straight victories with a 14-7 triumph over Wofford on Saturday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Appalachian (6-1, 3-0) held Wofford to just 237 yards of total offense and snuffed out a pair of Terrier scoring threats in the fourth quarter to help secure the win.

With the Mountaineers clinging to a 14-7 lead, all-American Corey Lynch made the first of a series of big plays by the ASU defense in the final period when he blocked a 34-yard field-goal attempt by Woffordës Nick Robinson with 9:39 left to play.

On their next series, the Terriers again drove well into Appalachian territory, but this time it was Lynchës all-America counterpart in the defensive backfield, Jeremy Wiggins, that made the big play when he dragged Woffordës Kevious Johnson down for a seven-yard loss on third down. On fourth-and-12 from the ASU 40, Josh Collierës pass fell short of the reach of Andy Strickland and the Apps took over on downs.

From there, Appalachian made three first downs to run the final 4:46 off the clock and seal the win.
Appalachian regained the No. 1 ranking in the 1-AA national polls by virtue of top-ranked New Hampshireës 42-23 loss to No. 13 James Madison last Saturday.

Next, ASU will visit Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga., at noon Saturday. The contest will be televised live on SportsSouth (formerly Turner South).

Chattanooga steams over hapless WCU 17-14 in OT

CULLOWHEE ÇƒÏ Chattanooga beat Western Carolina 17-14 in overtime in football in front of 8,540 fans last Saturday afternoon at Whitmire Stadium.

The decision between the teams with the worst records in the Southern Conference left WCU (2-4, 0-4) as the cellar-dwellar.

The game started on a bumbling note with each team stumbling on its first two series.

WCU quarterback Bennett Swygert was intercepted on the opening series and then his team failed to score from a half-yard out on fourth down in its second series. (Swygert left the game in the fourth quarter with a leg injury. He was to be tested this week.)

In similar fashion, Chattanooga (2-4, 1-2) suffered a bad snap after which its punter was tackled inside the Moccasins 10-yard-line on their first possession. On the next series, quarterback Matt Lopezës pass was intercepted inside WCUës 5.

In overtime, Moccasinës kicker Esteban Lopez nailed a 37-yard field goal on his teamës first possession.

After the Catamounts amassed only one yard in three plays, WCU kicker Jonathan Parsons missed a 41-yard field-goal attempt, giving Chattanooga the win. Parsons also missed two earlier field-goal tries ÇƒÓ of 25 and 58 yards ÇƒÓ in the game.

Next, WCU will visit The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., in a 2 p.m. Saturday clash.

Newberry tramples MHC
37-0; spoils homecoming

MARS HILL ÇƒÏ Newberry College stomped Mars Hill College 37-0 in football at the latterës homecoming celebration of the schoolës sesquicentennial  last Saturday afternoon at Meares Stadium.

The loss for the Lions (4-3, 1-2) was its second in a row in the South Atlantic Conference. MHC coach Tim Clifton later likened his injury-riddled team to a "M.A.S.H. unit" ÇƒÓ since its first game of the season.

Meanwhile, the fast and athletic Indians (7-0, 3-0) registered 502 yards of total offense, 355 of which were gained on the ground. Deshon Rodell and Derek Young were key contributors, with touchdown runs of 65 and 69 yards, respectively.

Newberryës main running back, Alex Haynes, gained 107 yards on 19 attempts. He scored one touchdown.

Indiansë quarterback Josh Stepp finished 16-of-20 for 147 yards. He scored twice on one-yard runs.
MHC trailed 21-0 at the half.

The Lions finished with 50 yards on 24 carries, led by Kendrick Johnson, who registered 35 yards on 12 carries.

MHC Quarterback Ricky Spradling finished 9-of-19 for 104 yards. However, he was sacked three times. Spradling is playing in place of senior quarterback Brandon Sims, who has been sidelined due to injury.
The Lions, who held the ball about 10 minutes less than the Indians, converted only twice on 12 attempts on third down, compared to Newberryës 6-for-11 ratio.

Next, MHC will host Presbyterian College at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
