One day after it was announced, the May 29 screening of the Disney-Pixar film “Onward’ was sold out, UNC Asheville stated in a May 19 press release.

However, the school announced the Friday before the scheduled screening that it was postponing the event because of predicted inclement weather on May 29 night. The show would be rescheduled for another night that has yet to be announced. And, alas, May 29 night turned out to be clear and mild.

When it announced the screening, UNCA noted that it is offering “the community a chance for a safe, entertaining change of scenery the evening of May 29, presenting a free drive-in screening of Disney-Pixar’s ‘Onward,’ with food trucks available on site. Onward is rated PG.

“To help maintain safe social distancing, only 65 vehicles will be admitted and advance tickets are required, first-come first served, available online here,” UNCA noted in a press release. “ The movie will be shown in UNC Asheville parking lot P-1, the lot on Campus Drive nearest the Broadway St. entrance to campus. The lot will open at 7:30 p.m. and the movie will begin at sunset, approximately 8:30 p.m. No ‘walk-in’ viewers will be admitted.”

UNCA noted that ood trucks will be on-site with food for purchase, and handwashing stations and portable toilets will be provided. Maintaining six-foot social distancing and mask-wearing are expected when viewers visit the food trucks or other facilities. Cars will be parked ten feet apart and viewers are encouraged to remain in their vehicles.

Set in a suburban fantasy world, "Onward" follows two elf brothers who set out on a quest to find an artifact that will bring back their deceased father. The film premiered at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival on February 21, 2020 and was released in the U.S. on March 6, but its run was cut short when COVID-19 caused the closure of movie theaters. The film is now available for online purchase and streaming.
