Chicago man, 27, charged with selling LSD at concert
A Chicago man was arrested by undercover police Saturday night on charges of selling hallucinogenic drugs outside the Asheville Civic Center.
Asheville police charged Benjamin Thomas Schaeffer, 27, with trafficking 1,000 doses of LSD during a performance by the String Cheese Incident.
In addition, Schaffer was charged with possessing marijuana and ecstasy with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver the drugs. He also was charged with maintaining a vehicle for drug use. He was being held in the Buncombe County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond.
Weaverville man charged with S.C. murder in 2000
Pedro Guiterez of Weaverville was arrested last Friday in connection with a killing that occurred more than six years ago in South Carolina.
The Buncombe County Sheriffës Department charged Guiterez, 32, with murder and assault with intent to kill.
The suspect was charged with killing Ricardo Gonzales via a gunshot to the head at a Laurens County mobile home park on June 23, 2000.
Guiterez was charged with shooting Nazario Gonzales on the same day, causing permanent physical injury.
Following charges for the crimes in South Carolina, Guiterez allegedly fled justice by moving to Buncombe County, warrants noted.
Guiterez, who was denied bond, was scheduled for a court hearing this past Monday to determine whether he will be extradited to South Carolina for trial.
Man shot in upper thigh; Leicester teenager charged
LEICESTER ÇƒÓ Following a shooting last Friday, Ronald Edward Fraklin 17, of Leicester was arrested by Buncombe County Sheriffës deputies.
The shooting, which reportedly was part of a civil disturbance, occurred outside the victimës home on Old Dix Creek Road.
The victim was shot once in his upper thigh with a small-caliber handgun, officials said. He was taken to Mission Hospitals, where his condition did not appear life-threatening.
Meanwhile, Franklin was being held at the Buncombe County Detention Center in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
Caller apologizes; officials to ponder pressing charges
In the wake of threatening calls to Buncombe County Democrats recently, authorities were to decide this past Monday whether to file charges against the caller, Sam Slappey of Candler.
Asheville police have said it appears that Slappey did not intend to commit any violence.
While party officials have indicated that they do not plan to press charges after Slappey called them last Thursday to apologize, they earlier filed a criminal complaint with Asheville police following the threats.
The threats include a telephone call to a worker and two that were left in answering machine messages.
In one voice message filled with profanity, the caller expressed the hope that party workers would have their children die in their arms.
In another message, he vowed, "Iëm going to come see you and when I walk through that door, you wonët have to ask who I am."
In explaining his response, Slappey reportedly said he was agitated by political phone calls to his home.
Asheville police will meet with prosecutors to discuss the case.
18-year-old man charged with break-ins at UNCA
Leonard Jack Davis, an 18-year-old student, was arrested on charges of breaking and entering and larceny last Wednesday for his alleged involvement in a recent incident in a residence hall at UNC Asheville.
Specifically, Davis was charged with two felony counts of breaking and entering, two felony counts of larceny after breaking and entering and one misdemeanor count of larceny.
Davis reportedly was brought to Founders Hall on the UNCA campus by a resident student about 12:10 a.m. Sept. 29, UNCA campus police reported.
While there, Davis allegedly entered three different dormitory rooms on the third floor without permission and stole several electronic items from the rooms, police said.
As a result of a police investigation, felony arrest warrants were obtained on Davis on Oct. 3. The Asheville Police Department then arrested Davis about 8:50 a.m. the next day at his home at 21 Mountain Terrace. He later was handed over to to UNCA police, who transported the suspect to the Buncombe County Detention Center, where he was served with the arrest warrants. Davis was held on a $4,500 secured bond.
Davis also was issued a written trespass warning notice banning him from UNCA property. "If he comes on UNCA property again, he will be arrested for trespassing,"
