No. 2 Appalachian cruises past Chattanooga 56-21
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ÇƒÏ In one of its most dominating performances in recent memory, Appalachian State jumped out to a 49-0 lead early in the third quarter and never looked back in a 56-21 rout over Chattanooga in Southern Conference football last Saturday night at Finley Stadium.
Second-ranked ASU (5-1, 2-0) rolled up 596 yards of total offense, including 399 in the first half alone, en route to taking a 35-0 halftime lead. The Mountaineers set a school record by scoring 40-plus points for the fourth-straight game and racked up 500 yards of offense for the third time in those four outings.
Buoyed
by 296 yards on 11-of-12 passing in the first half alone by freshman
Armanti Edwards, Appalachian found the end zone on seven of its first
eight possessions. Wide receiver William Mayfield had six catches for
180 yards and Kevin Richardson and Dexter Jackson scored two touchdowns
apiece in the first half.
Mayfield had
114 yards in the first quarter alone to help Appalachian open a 14-0
lead. The seniorës career-long 61-yard reception on ASUës second
possession preceded his third touchdown of the season, a seven-yarder
from Edwards. His 49-yard catch on Appalachianës next series set up a
one-yard touchdown run by Richardson with 58 seconds to play in the
first period.
The Mountaineers
stretched the lead to 21-0 on a 27-yard reverse by Jackson with 11:08
still to play in the second quarter and the onslaught continued Edwards
found Jackson for a 79-yard touchdown connection on the next series to
make it 28-0. Richardson capped the Mountaineersë dazzling first-half
performance with a three-yard score with 1:15 left to play before the
break.
ASU scored on
its first two possessions of the second half to extend its lead to 49-0
just 6:47 into the third quarter. Edwards and Mayfield hooked up again
for a 15-yard touchdown and Richardson broke off a 71-yard touchdown
run, the second-longest of his career, to account for the third-quarter
scoring.
Chattanooga
(2-4, 1-2) stopped the bleeding with a pair of third-quarter touchdowns
on a 14-yard pass from Matt Lopez to Emanuel Hassell and a 59-yard
return of an errant Trey Elder pass by Quintez Smith.
The teams traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter to close the scoring.
Edwards made a
strong case to become the SoConës Freshman of the Week for the third
consecutive week by completing 12-of-14 passes overall for 311 yards
and three touchdowns, while Mayfield turned in his second straight
outstanding performance with seven catches for 195 yards and a
career-best two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Richardson gained 101 yards on 10 carries.
Defensively, ASU
held all-SoCon running back Eldra Buckley to under 100 yards for the
first time in nine games, limiting him to just 51 yards on 18 carries.
Next, Appalachian will host conference rival Wofford at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
No. 15 Carson-Newman rallies to edge MHC 10-7
JEFFERSON CITY,
Tenn. ÇƒÏ Despite three turnovers, No. 15 Carson-Newman battled back late
to nip Mars Hill College 10-7 last Saturday afternoon at Burke-Tarr
Stadium.
The win made Carson-Newman coach Ken Sparks the all-time winningest coach in Division II football with 256 victories.
The Eagles (5-1, 1-1) scored on a field goal in the first quarter, but amassed only 124 offensive yards in the first half.
MHC quarterback
Ricky Spradling, a former Avery County standout, threw a hail mary pass
in the final seconds, but it was knocked down in the end zone.
Spradling finished 8-of-21 for 160 yards. For the game, MHC registered just seven rushing yards on 32 carries.
Next, MHC (4-2, 1-1) will host Newberry College at 2:30 p.m. at Meares Stadium.
Elon rolls to 37-19 triumph over injury-depleted WCU
ELON ÇƒÏ Elon
whipped injury-depleted Western Carolina 37-19 in Southern Conference
football last Saturday afternoon at Rhodes Stadium.
With
quick-hitting drives not exceeding 50 yards, Elon (3-2, 1-1) raced to a
17-0 lead in the first 10 minutes and cruised to victory. Elonës win
snapped WCUës four-game winning streak in the series and marked the
Phoenixës first triumph over the Catamounts since joining the
conference.
Todd Spitzer, a
transfer from Division 1 Cincinnati, began tenuously in his debut as
WCUës quarterback, but later settled in to complete 22 of 38 passes for
228 yards, including a touchdown pass and an interception.
Meanwhile, Elon quarterback Wes Pope sparkled, hitting three aerial touchdowns for a career-best 296 passing yards.
An 83-yard
kickoff return for a WCU touchdown by former Reynolds High standout
Willie Harper narrowed the deficit to 20-10, but that is as close as
the game ever got.
For WCU (2-3,
0-3), highlights included two career-best 41-yard field goals in the
second quarter by sophomore Jonathan Parsons and a 5-yard scoring pass
from Spitzer to Michael Hines for the final scoring in the game against
the Phoenixës second-string defense.
WCU running back Darius Fudge finished with 61 yards on 15 carries ÇƒÓ his second-lowest production of the season.
The Catamounts,
already plagued by injuries to four defensive tackles, lost senior
defensive tackle Felipe Foster to a knee injury on the gameës first
series.
Next, WCU will host Chattanooga at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Whitmire Stadium.
Suffering 4th shutout in row,
BC annihilated 55-0 by NGC
BREVARD ÇƒÓ North
Greenville College never had to punt as it humiliated winless Brevard
College 55-0 in football last Saturday afternoon at Brevard High School.
In the last home
appearance of the season for BC (0-5), the Tornados suffered their
fourth consecutive shutout loss. Worse, BCës annihilation occurred in
front of 60 potential recruits who were visiting the school.
NGC (4-2)
registered touchdowns on six of its first seven possessions. Moreover,
a penalty for an illegal block on its eighth possession negated what
would have been a 48-0 lead with 5:45 left in the third quarter.
For the game, the Crusaders gained 319 yards rushing and 230 yards passing.
In the first 10
offensive series for the Tornados, eight ended after three plays and a
punt, while the other two were stymied by an interception and halftime.
BCës six first downs were achieved during the final drives of each half.
Leading BC in rushing was Tryone Arrington, who gains 56 yards on 14 carries.
In an almost nonexistent BC passing game, former Enka High standout Colby McCoy, BCës quarterback, finished 3-of-9 for 16 yards.
For NGC, Rashad
Cummings amassed 150 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries, while
quarterback Eric Moeller threw for 202 yards and a touchdown,
completing 16-of-18 passes, including 12 in a row to begin the game.
Next, BC visits winless Chowan College in Murfreesboro at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Grizzlies lose last game;
now await playoff pairings
COLUMBIA, S.C. ÇƒÓ The Carolina Timberwolves defeated the Asheville Grizzlies 33-14 in minor-league football on Sept. 30.
In the season-closing game for the Grizzlies, Cortez Oliver and Calvin Williams each scored touchdowns for the Asheville squad.
The Grizzlies, which finished with a 6-4-0 record, are awaiting the announcement of playoff seeds.
