No. 2 Appalachian cruises
past Chattanooga 56-21

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ÇƒÏ In one of its most dominating performances in recent memory, Appalachian State jumped out to a 49-0 lead early in the third quarter and never looked back in a 56-21 rout over Chattanooga in Southern Conference football last Saturday night at Finley Stadium.

Second-ranked ASU (5-1, 2-0) rolled up 596 yards of total offense, including 399 in the first half alone, en route to taking a 35-0 halftime lead. The Mountaineers set a school record by scoring 40-plus points for the fourth-straight game and racked up 500 yards of offense for the third time in those four outings.
Buoyed by 296 yards on 11-of-12 passing in the first half alone by freshman Armanti Edwards, Appalachian found the end zone on seven of its first eight possessions. Wide receiver William Mayfield had six catches for 180 yards and Kevin Richardson and Dexter Jackson scored two touchdowns apiece in the first half.

Mayfield had 114 yards in the first quarter alone to help Appalachian open a 14-0 lead. The seniorës career-long 61-yard reception on ASUës second possession preceded his third touchdown of the season, a seven-yarder from Edwards. His 49-yard catch on Appalachianës next series set up a one-yard touchdown run by Richardson with 58 seconds to play in the first period.

The Mountaineers stretched the lead to 21-0 on a 27-yard reverse by Jackson with 11:08 still to play in the second quarter and the onslaught continued Edwards found Jackson for a 79-yard touchdown connection on the next series to make it 28-0. Richardson capped the Mountaineersë dazzling first-half performance with a three-yard score with 1:15 left to play before the break.

ASU scored on its first two possessions of the second half to extend its lead to 49-0 just 6:47 into the third quarter. Edwards and Mayfield hooked up again for a 15-yard touchdown and Richardson broke off a 71-yard touchdown run, the second-longest of his career, to account for the third-quarter scoring.

Chattanooga (2-4, 1-2) stopped the bleeding with a pair of third-quarter touchdowns on a 14-yard pass from Matt Lopez to Emanuel Hassell and a 59-yard return of an errant Trey Elder pass by Quintez Smith.

The teams traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter to close the scoring.

Edwards made a strong case to become the SoConës Freshman of the Week for the third consecutive week by completing 12-of-14 passes overall for 311 yards and three touchdowns, while Mayfield turned in his second straight outstanding performance with seven catches for 195 yards and a career-best two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Richardson gained 101 yards on 10 carries.

Defensively, ASU held all-SoCon running back Eldra Buckley to under 100 yards for the first time in nine games, limiting him to just 51 yards on 18 carries.

Next, Appalachian will host conference rival Wofford at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

No. 15 Carson-Newman rallies to edge MHC 10-7

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. ÇƒÏ Despite three turnovers, No. 15 Carson-Newman battled back late to nip Mars Hill College 10-7 last Saturday afternoon at Burke-Tarr Stadium.

Elon rolls to 37-19 triumph over injury-depleted WCU

ELON ÇƒÏ Elon whipped injury-depleted Western Carolina 37-19 in Southern Conference football last Saturday afternoon at Rhodes Stadium.

With quick-hitting drives not exceeding 50 yards, Elon (3-2, 1-1) raced to a 17-0 lead in the first 10 minutes and cruised to victory. Elonës win snapped WCUës four-game winning streak in the series and marked the Phoenixës first triumph over the Catamounts since joining the conference.

Todd Spitzer, a transfer from Division 1 Cincinnati, began tenuously in his debut as WCUës quarterback, but later settled in to complete 22 of 38 passes for 228 yards, including a touchdown pass and an interception.

Meanwhile, Elon quarterback Wes Pope sparkled, hitting three aerial touchdowns for a career-best 296 passing yards.

An 83-yard kickoff return for a WCU touchdown by former Reynolds High standout Willie Harper narrowed the deficit to 20-10, but that is as close as the game ever got.

For WCU (2-3, 0-3), highlights included two career-best 41-yard field goals in the second quarter by sophomore Jonathan Parsons and a 5-yard scoring pass from Spitzer to Michael Hines for the final scoring in the game against the Phoenixës second-string defense.

WCU running back Darius Fudge finished with 61 yards on 15 carries ÇƒÓ his second-lowest production of the season.

The Catamounts, already plagued by injuries to four defensive tackles, lost senior defensive tackle Felipe Foster to a knee injury on the gameës first series.

Next, WCU will host Chattanooga at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Whitmire Stadium.

Suffering 4th shutout in row,

BC annihilated 55-0 by NGC

BREVARD ÇƒÓ North Greenville College never had to punt as it humiliated winless Brevard College 55-0 in football last Saturday afternoon at Brevard High School.

NGC (4-2) registered touchdowns on six of its first seven possessions. Moreover, a penalty for an illegal block on its eighth possession negated what would have been a 48-0 lead with 5:45 left in the third quarter.

In the first 10 offensive series for the Tornados, eight ended after three plays and a punt, while the other two were stymied by an interception and halftime. BCës six first downs were achieved during the final drives of each half.

In an almost nonexistent BC passing game, former Enka High standout Colby McCoy, BCës quarterback, finished 3-of-9 for 16 yards.
