No. 2 ASU thumps Elon 45-21 before record crowd
BOONE ÇƒÏ A Kidd Brewer Stadium-record crowd of 26,620 witnessed No. 2 Appalachian State University football extend its home winning streak to 21 with a resounding 45-21 homecoming victory over Elon on Saturday afternoon.
The crowd surpassed the previous ASU record of 25,584 set last Nov. 12 versus Western Carolina. The Rockës official seating capacity is 16,650.
William Mayfield set career highs with nine receptions for 182 yards to lead an Appalachian offense that amassed 569 yards of total offense. The 182-yard performance was the best by an ASU receiver since DaVon Fowlkes set school records with 280 yards on 17 catches versus Elon in 2004.
ASU (4-1, 1-0) outgained Elon (2-2, 0-1), 569-286 yards, and held an 89-56 advantage in offensive plays and a 34:29-25:31 edge in time of possession.
Next, ASU will visit Chattanooga (Tenn.), with kickoff set at 6 p.m. Saturday.
MHC stuns No. 15 Catawba
25-7 behind team effort
MARS HILL ÇƒÏ Fueled by a solid team effort, Mars Hill College shocked
No. 15 Catawba College 25-7 in football on a sun-splashed Saturday
afternoon.
The win, the
first for MHC (4-1, 1-0) over Catawba since 1995, also was the Lionsë
season-opener in South Atlantic Conference action. The Indians were
ranked No. 15 by the Division II American Football Coaches Association.
Among the
highlights for the Lions were a four-down goal-line stand in the final
seconds of the first half, scoring a safety in the third quarter,
returning an interception for a touchdown in the third quarter and a
blocked punt that resulted in a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Catawba (3-1,
0-1) was whitewashed until quarterback Brad Roach scored from the MHC 1
on the second play of the fourth quarter. Roach completed 17-of-38
passes for 220 yards.
Meanwhile, Ricky
Spradling, filling in for starting MHC quarterback Brandon Sims, went
4-of-8 for 80 yards and gave up no turnovers. Sims hurt his left knee
in the gameës opening drive.
The Lions opened
the gameës scoring on a Spradling pass in the flat to Kendrick Johnson,
who raced 52 yards through the Indiansë defense for a touchdown.
Spradling, a
former Avery County standout, also ran a bootleg 41 yards, setting up a
27-yard Chase Harrison field goal with 7:15 left in the fourth quarter.
Next, MHC visits No. 6 Carson-Newman at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Georgia Southern defeats
WCU for 12th straight year
CULLOWHEE ÇƒÏ Georgia Southern cruised to a 24-14 win over No. 24 Western
Carolina in football during Mountain Heritage Day at Whitmire Stadium
last Saturday.
The win was
Georgia Southernës 12th in a row over the Catamounts in the series.
Injury-depleted WCU (2-2, 0-2) played without four of its five
defensive tackles as GS amassed 403 yards of offense.
The Cats
suffered four turnovers as well as the loss of starting quarterback
Bennet Swygert, who left early in the third quarter with an ankle
sprain; and defensive back Carlton Bailey, who left the game in the
first quarter with a sprained toe.
Trailing 24-0 in
the fourth quarter, WCU junior quarterback Todd Spitzer fired a pair of
touchdown passes of 5 and 23 yards to Michael Hines, a former Asheville
High star. Spitzer finished 7-of-17 for 118 yards. Cats tailback Darius
Fudge rushed for 97 yards.
Next, WCU visits Elon at 2 p.m. Saturday.
BC to host N. Greenville
in homecoming clash
BREVARD ÇƒÏ Brevard Collegeës fledgling football squad returns to action after an open date last Saturday.
BC (0-5) will host North Greenville College for homecoming at 2 p.m. Saturday at Brevard High Schoolës stadium.
BC, which reinstated football this season after a 56-year lapse, is fielding a team comprised mostly of true freshmen.

UNCA, WCU create series
to aid charity for children
UNC
Asheville and Western Carolina University, which meet in 10 sporting
events during the 2006-07 school yard, have agreed to play for the
Parkway Series Trophy, the schools recently announced.
Points are
earned in head-to-head competition and in volunteering at Big
Brothers/Big Sisters events. The university with the most overall
student-athlete participation gains a point per semester. Fans can help
their respective universities gain an extra point toward the
championship by making donations at all Parkway Series events.
At the end of
each academic year, the winning school will be awarded the trophy and
Arbyës will make a donation to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters foundation
on behalf of the winning school.
