Bear taken to safer home after capture on Merrimon
Wednesday, 30 November 2005 09:00
A black bear cub who stayed for three weeks on a wooded hillside next to Merrimon Avenue before being captured by wildlife authorities last Monday will have a new home at a state-owned facility north of Raleigh.

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission captured the bear after it drew crowds of onlookers Monday, citing concerns about traffic disruptions and the possibility of an accident due to so many people stopping to observe the cub.

Officials noted that after the 25-pound cub puts on more weight, it will likely be released into a remote area, probably back into the mountains.

The local bear population has risen in recent years, helped by the state??s sanctuary program.
