Grizzlies corral Broncos 14-0 with pair of TD passes
BEAUFORT, S.C. ÇƒÓ The Asheville Grizzlies shut out the Beaufort Broncos 14-0 in minor league football Saturday night.
Scoring both touchdowns on catches for the Grizzlies was Patrick Johnson, including a 28-yard aerial in the third quarter and a 61-yard swing pass in the fourth. Both passes were thrown by quarterback Phil Hall.
Next,
Asheville (5-1-0) will host the Nashville Storm at noon Sunday in a
battle pitting the No. 2 and 1 teams in their division.
Fifth-inning fireworks fuel
Asheville to sacking of Rome
A four-run rally
in the fifth inning propelled the Asheville Tourists to 5-3 win over
the Rome Braves baseball at McCormick Field last Friday night.
Tied 1-1,
Asheville erupted in the fifth, highlighted by a three-run shot by left
fielder Cole Garner, who leads the team with 17 home runs.
Getting the win
for the Tourists was starter Shane Lindsay (2-0), who allowed one hit,
one run and four walks in five innings. He also struck out seven.
Braves scalp Tourists 10-8
in 10-inning seesaw battle
The Rome Braves
withstood three comeback attempts by the Asheville Tourists to win 10-8
in 10 innings of baseball in front of 3,345 fans at McCormick Field
last Thursday night.
With his team
trailing 8-6 with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Rome first
baseman Josh Morris swatted a two-run home run off reliever Andrew
Johnston to send the game into extra innings.
In the 10th
inning, the Braves scored two runs against reliever Brett Strickland
(0-5) to secure the victory. Strickland, who took the loss for the
Tourists, allowed three hits and two runs in one inning. He struck out
one.
Asheville used
four pitchers who gave up a season-high 20 hits. In addition, the
Touristsë defense committed three errors that led to five unearned runs.
Leading
Asheville at the plate was center fielder Dexter Fowler, who finished
3-for-6 with a home run. He scored twice. Also chipping in with three
hits each were second baseman Eric Young, left fielder Cole Garner and
third baseman Jason Van Kooten.
Asheville sweeps Rome
4-3, 7-0 in doubleheader
The Asheville
Tourists swept a doubleheader with the Rome Braves in baseball in front
of 1,993 fans at McCormick Field last Wednesday night.
Asheville won
the first game 4-3 in eight innings and the nightcap 7-0 in seven
innings. The shortened doubleheader was played because the previous
nightës game was cancelled due to rain.
Getting the win
in the first game was Touristsë reliever David Patton, who sparkled on
the mound as he struck out six batters and allowed just one hit in
2-1/3 innings.
Tied 3-3 after
six innings, Asheville scored the game-winner in the eighth inning by
capitalizing on Rome snafus, including a hit batter and sloppy fielding.
In the nightcap,
four Touristsë pitchers combined for a 7-0 one-hitter. The win went to
reliever Pedro Strop (1-0), who pitched two perfect innings, striking
out three. Earning his 10th save of the season was Brett Strickland.
Also contributing to the shutout were starter Zach Simons and reliever
James Burok.
Ex-Roberson star charged
with drinking after wreck
GRAND RAPIDS,
Mich. ÇƒÓ A former Asheville, N.C., area baseball player has been accused
of violating Michiganës zero-tolerance alcohol law following a minor
traffic accident.
Cameron Maybin,
19, a former Roberson High star, reportedly registered a 0.04
blood-alcohol level. The stateës legal limit for driving is 0.08
percent, although minors can be ticketed for the presence of any
alcohol in their systems.
A member of the
West Michigan Whitecaps in the Detroit Tigersë organization, Maybin had
alcohol in his system when the car he was driving smacked into a
utility pole on July 13, officials said.
Maybinës attorney reportedly said his client would plead not guilty of the charge.
Former Atlanta 1st baseman
to speak Thursday at BBC
