From Staff Reports

Prosecutors were ordered by a judge on Aug. 1 to share all records relating to charges against Asheville Police Chief William Anderson’s son and allegations the chief tried to coerce an officer into making false statements about the case.

Included in the evidence are a previously undisclosed tape recording of statements made by the chief talking to officers several days after the traffic accident involving Chad Anderson, according to attorney George Hyler. He represents Lt. William Wilke,

Wilke, who filed the complaints agaiinst the police chief, obtained the recording from another officer.

At the Aug. 1 hearing, Assistant District Attorney Megan Apple said he had no objection to a request filed by attorney Sean Devereux last month, seeking all records involving the March 9 traffic accident and Wilkes’ allegations that the chief and Capt. Stony Gonce tried to coerce him into making “false and misleading” statements about the wreck. Devereux represents Chad Anderson.

Judge James Downs ordered the district attorney’s office and Hyler to “provide all exculpatory or potentially exculpatory information” to Devereux.
