Readerës outrage over sign ignorant, letter writer says
Devon Stockard expresses OUTRAGE at the billboard depicting a Mexican flag flying above an inverted American flag (Wed. Aug. 2).
She obviously is ignorant of the fact that this is an actual photo taken in May of this year when Latino immigrants (legal and illegal) demonstrated to show the importance of their presence in our country. Does not indicate much gratitude to our country, does it?
Stockard might do well to check out The Action Club to explore ways of channeling the OUTRAGE in a positive direction.

Vegan food termed best bet to combat global warming
The editorial "Global warming: Itës too darn hot" suggested people "start making choices right now to impact its effects."
I couldnët agree
more. Recycling, using solar and wind power, buying energy efficient
appliances and lightbulbs, switching to biodiesel, choosing local and
organic foods, walking and riding bicycles instead of driving, building
greener homes and purchasing hybrid automobiles are all important
actions.
Consuming less
is critical. Instead of buying a birthday gift that most likely will
end up at the landfill, why not buy a gift membership to an
environmental group?
Instead of breeding a child, why not adopt one?
And thereës one
more lifestyle change that seldom gets mentioned. According to
researchers at the University of Chicago, adopting a vegan diet has a
bigger impact in reducing global warming than switching to a Toyota
Prius.
Not everyone can buy a hybrid, but everyone can reduce or eliminate meat, dairy and egg consumption.
Great vegan food
is abundant in the area. Give it a try. A plant-based diet is better
for your health, for the earth and for the animals. What are you
waiting for? To learn more, visit www.GoVeg.com.

Ban of French dish urged; termed cruelty to animals
Foie Gras means
"fatty liver" in French. By shoving a metal pipe down their throats,
ducks and geese are force fed grain three times per day for several
weeks.
The result is a diseased liver that is 10 times its normal size. This is considered a delicacy.
They, like most
other food animals, are factory farmed; they are confined in dark
sheds, forced to endure extreme weather conditions, with little water.
Several
countries have banned foie gras, including Austria, Denmark, Finland,
Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and the U.K. In the U.S.,
Chicago has banned it, and California, New York, Massachusetts and
Illinois are working on bans.
To help us ban
foie gras in Asheville, do not purchase it. There are only three
restaurants that serve Foie Gras in Asheville: Table, Richmond Hill Inn
and Grove Park Inn. Please write them to politely tell them to take the
official pledge and permanantly remove this item from their menu. See
www.nofoiegras.org

Letter-writer criticizes Bush for his handling of Iraq war
Our Current
Occupant may deserve more respect than heës been getting. That would
make him more accomplished than Ronald Reagan who rose so high in the
minds of his admirers as to get the Washington Airport named after him.
But all Mr
Reagan actually accomplished for his Right Wing followers was to carry
on the rich tradition of denigrating, minimizing and bad-mouthing the
Government he had sworn to uphold. He did so by a rather ingenious
strategy, first to claim the Government was incapable of some function
or other, cut some Agencyës budget and then crow ǃÓëSee, told yaë when
the reduced funds were followed by reduced success.
On the other
hand, Mr Bush has not only convinced his followers that Government
canët get anything done ( Katrina or numerous other instances), but has
also, with one hand tied behind his back, hamstrung the despised UN by
calling for it to put a stop to the conflict in Lebanon, while
encouraging Israel in its long-standing animosity towards the UN. What
some might call a two-fer.
His End-of-Time
followers will simply have to go drink their Kool Aid, because the US
has demonstrated in Iraq it doesnët have the foggiest idea what itës
doing.
The Middle East
conflict will sort itself out in spite of Condisë best efforts, and we
will go back to condemning what used to be the greatest democracy in
the World. Surely if anyone ever deserved a spot on Mt. Rushmore, itës
our Current Occupant.
