In a limited, demand-based release, “Atlas Shrugged: Part 1,” the film adaptation of Ayn Rand’s pro-free market capitalism novel, hits theaters April 15, including The Carolina Cinemas at 1640 Hendersonville Road, Asheville.
Asheville showtimes are 11:45 a.m. and 2, 4:30, 7 and 9:50 p.m. The 102-minute film is scheduled to play through April 21.
Meanwhile, Neal Reed, manager of The Fine Arts Theatre said there is a possibility that his cinema will bring in the show, but there are no plans for it as of April 13.
Interestingly, while the book on which it was based was written 50 ago, the film is set in the year 2016.
As Rand’s proponents increasingly voice their view that the plot
of her book “Atlas Shrugged” is playing out in today’s crumbling
society, the film reportedly portrays an eerily similar resemblance to
states like American’s economic basket case, California.
Indeed, “Atlas Shrugged” shows collapsing manufacturing
industries, eroding economic liberty and entrepreneurialism and the
productive members of society rapidly disappearing, or run out of
business by bureacratic red tape and unreasonable regulations.
Taylor Schilling plays Dagny Taggart, with Grant Bowler as Henry Rearden.
The film has not been endorsed by the Rand estate and reportedly
was put together cheaply and quickly in order not to lose the rights to
the book.
