Tourists take advantage of Captains?? errors for win

EASTLAKE, Ohio ?? The Asheville Tourists topped the Lake County Captains 4-2 in baseball last Monday night.


Asheville??s win ?? snapping a two-game losing streak ?? was keyed on strong pitching coupled with capitalizing on two errors by Lake County.



 
Tourists?? starter Brandon Durden (8-2), who allowed seven hits, two runs and two walks in seven innings, got the win. He struck out five. Reliever Andrew Johnston, who allowed one hit in one inning, earned his 11th save of the season.

Offensively, Asheville (17-15) was led by second baseman Eric Young Jr., who finished 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and scored two runs; and left fielder Colee Garner, who went 2-for-4, scored one run and tallied one RBI.


Again, Catfish nip Tourists; grand-slam seals triumph


The Columbus Catfish staged a late comeback to edge the Asheville Tourists 6-5 in baseball in front of 3,124 fans at McCormick Field last Saturday night.


For Asheville (15-15), the game marked the second consecutive one-run loss to Columbus.


Trailing 5-0 after six innings, Columbus (16-14) rallied to score two runs in the seventh inning. The victory then was secured in  the eighth inning when Catfish left fielder Lucas May smashed a grand-slam home run.


A bright spot for Asheville was the pitching or starter Xavier Cedeno, who allowed six hits, two runs and five walks in 6-1/3 innings.


However, reliever Andrew Johnston (0-3) took the loss for the Tourists after he allowed the grand-slam shot.


At the plate, Asheville was led by second baseman Eric Young Jr., who finished 2-for-3, including a double and two RBIs.


Columbus clips Asheville
11-10 in lengthy ballgame

The Columbus Catfish nipped the Asheville Tourists 11-10 in baseball in front of 2,312 fans at McCormick Field last Friday night.


Asheville suffered its fifth one-run defeat in the last eight losses. Friday??s game also was yet another in a string of marathons ?? lasting four hours 10 minutes.


Following a four-run fifth inning, Asheville led 8-3, but Columbus retaliated with a five-run sixth to tie the game.


Moreover, the Catfish added one run in the seventh and two in the eight innings, while the Tourists came up short when they scored just two runs in the eighth.


Taking the loss for Asheville was James Burok (4-5), who allowed three hits, four runs (three earned) and three walks in 1-1/3 innings.


Tourists stage 10-run rally
in 6th to fillet Catfish 16-9

In one of their wildest home games ever, the Asheville Tourists rallied to score 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to sink the Columbus Catfish 16-9 in baseball in front of 3,023 fans at McCormick Field last Thursday night.


Columbus scored five runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-4 lead, but Asheville erupted for 10 runs in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead at 14-8.


The sixth inning, which spanned more than an hour, included a combined 15 runs, 10 hits, five walks, five stolen bases, five pitchers used and three batters hit by a pitch.


Getting the win for Asheville was reliever Jon George (3-4), who allowed seven hits, one run and one walk in 3-1/3 innings.


Offensively, the Tourists were led by catcher Kyle Blumenthal, who finished 2-for-5 with one run and five RBIs. He swatted a three-run home run and a two-run double.


Columbus beats Asheville
6-3 with torrid 11th inning

The Columbus Catfish scored three runs in the top of the 11th inning to defeat the Asheville Tourists 6-3 in baseball in front of 2,930 fans at McCormick Field last Wednesday night.


Columbus (14-13) broke the tie in the 11th off Asheville reliever Buzz Vargas, who allowed a leadoff single, threw a wild pitch, hit a batter and issued an intentional walk to Tony Harper. With the bases loaded and two outs, Travis Denker then smashed a double that cleared the bases.


Vargas (1-3), who got the loss, allowed two hits, three runs and one walk in two innings.


At the plate, the Tourists were led by shortstop Chris Nelson, who swatted a solo shot in the first inning and an RBI single in the third.


Riverdogs edge Tourists
7-6 in 10-inning shootout

CHARLESTON, S.C. ?? The Charleston Riverdogs rallied to beat the Asheville Tourists 7-6 in 10 innings of baseball on July 18.


Charleston capitalized on a fielding error by Asheville center fielder Dexter Fowler, enabling Tim Battle to reach first. Battle later scored on a one-out sacrifice fly.


The Tourists led 6-3 in the eighth, but the Riverdogs scored four runs in the final three innings to win the game.


Asheville reliever Brett Strickland (0-4) took the loss, allowing one unearned run in two-thirds of an inning.


Asheville hangs on to win
despite Charleston rally

CHARLESTON, S.C. ?? The Asheville Tourists withstood a ninth-inning rally to top the Charleston RiverDogs 5-3 in baseball on July 17.


Trailing 5-0, Charleston scored three runs in the ninth, but the effort was not enough.


Getting the win was starter Xavier Cedeno (6-6), who struck out seven in six innings. He allowed five hits and no runs.


At the plate, Asheville was led by Cole Garner and Phillip Cuadrado, who each finished 3-for-4.

Cuadrado also belted his seventh home run of the season ?? a two-run shot in the sixth inning.


Grizzlies stage comeback in 4th frame to top Firecats


CHARLESTON, S.C. ?? Fueled by a big fourth-quarter, the Asheville Grizzlies rallied to beat the Charleston Firecats 20-14 in football last Saturday night.


Asheville trailed 12-0 entering the final quarter, but cut the deficit to five points on on an 18-yard flare pass for a score from Dameon Lewis to Tennyson Rucker, followed by an extra point.


The Grizzlies scored again on a 35-yard sweep by Keyshaul Smith. Asheville widened the margin later on a pass interception by Patrick Johnson, who returned it 63 yards for a touchdown.


Next, Asheville will host the Greenville Greyhounds at 4 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
