WEAVERVILLE — Some residents protested taxes increases and a lack of representation, but Weaverville Town Council nonetheless voted unanimously on Oct. 19 to annex 279 parcels of property to the south, boosting the town’s population by 612 people.
Mayor Bett Stroud presided as all five council members voted on the controversial involuntary annexation plan.
With the additional residents, Weaverville, previously boasting 3,232 residents, expanded by 19 percent.
Some of those in the annexed areas expressed anger afterward,
complaining they would get — in at least one case — a $900 yearly tax
increase with no substantive increase in services.
