CHEROKEE — Economic troubles have taken a toll on gambling at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino, resulting in a dip in casino payments to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

The tribe issued members per capita checks on June 1 for $3,892, down from $4,473 in December.

The tribe’s 14,000 members receive a check twice yearly from casino profits. About half of the money from the casino goes to tribe members and the other half goes to operate the tribe’s government.

Harrah’s Cherokee profits are not made public by the Eastern Band, but based on the payments, the casino brought in about $225.8 million over the last 12 months, down about 11 percent from the year before.

In January, Harrah’s Cherokee cut 5 percent of its workforce, or about 100 jobs, in the wake of a 15 percent drop in visitors.
