FLAT ROCK — First Lady Laura Bush announced a new $50,000 National Park Foundation grant to be given to the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site in Flat Rock during a late-afternoon visit on July 28.

Bush was accompanied by Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C. She visited with a group of Junior Rangers and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Henderson County. The pair also petted the site’s famous goats and toured the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet’s home. Then she presented the grant from the consumer products company Unilever on behalf of the National Parks Foundation.

The grant will expand the site’s Junior Ranger and youth programs.
