UNC Asheville’s athletic department recently submitted plans to the state for a new track, field-event facilities and a stadium with bleachers, all of which would cost a projected $2 million.
The plans for the Karl Straus project were sent back to UNCA for corrections. The work is being revised by Camille-Alberice Architects, a local firm, before it is resubmitted to the state.
By law, the SCO must approve all university building projects
UNCA currently is raising money for the project on the UNCA Track
Pledge Web site. To date, the university has raised about $1.2 million
for the track complex, including $500,000 donated by Buncombe County
that has yet to be finalized. An anonomous donor has pledged another
$500,000, pending final action on Buncombe’s offer.
Upon receiving state approval, the project will be put to bid for a construction contractor.
UNCA’s current track, built more than 25 years ago, fails to
meet NCAA standards for competition. Some members of the track team,
hobbled by injuries, have blamed the track’s hard surface for their
woes.
