UNC Asheville reportedly will offer coach Eddie Biedenbach a contract extension after he orchestrated the best men’s basketball record in school history.
Biedenbach’s Bulldogs finished 23-10 and claimed a share of the Big South Conference regular-season crown with a 10-4 BSC finish.
Besides a stellar record, Biedenbach and his squad also set a school record for attendance — selling out the last 10 games of the season — at the 1,100 seat Justice Center on the school’s campus.
UNCA earned a spot in the National Invitational Tournament, where it
was drubbed 84-66 by Ohio State in the first round. The NIT invitation
marked the Bulldogs’ second postseason appearance in the past six
seasons.
Named the BSC Coach of the Year for this season, Biedenbach has one year left on a contract that pays $86,603.
The UNCA mentor reportedly has expressed an interest in remaining at
UNCA, where the team will be playing in a new arena — the on-campus
Kimmel Arena — that is expected to be open in time for the 2010-11
season.
During his 12 seasons at the Bulldogs’ helm, Biedenbach has registered at 166-186 record.
Following the 2006-07 season, there were grumblings in the community
and around campus about UNCA’s 12-19 finish. The school’s athletic
director, Janet Cone, even spoke publicly about the men’s team needing
to win more games.
This season, the Bulldogs roared to an 18-4 start. At their zenith,
they ranked 12th in a national mid-major poll. Moreover, UNCA earned
its first-ever vote in The Associated Press’s Top 25 poll.
