Officials with office-supply store Staples said they hope to complete alterations to the company’s Merrimon Avenue store by June, following the city Board of Adjustment’s approval of a compromise agreement over the building’s signs.
The board approved the agreement March 24, allowing the building’s signs to be smaller than they currently are, but still larger than is legally permitted under city ordinances.
Currently, the lettering on the signs is 5 feet tall, but the red background behind the letters is considerably larger, making it in excess of the legal limit for signs in the city limits.
Residents had complained about the signage, as well as other design aspects of the building.
But Staples had argued that the red background was not part of
the company’s sign, and therefore should not be included in
calculations of the size of the signs.
Under the compromise, the lettering will be reduced to 4 feet
tall, while the red background will be diminished by roughly two-thirds.
The new signs will be 150 square feet total, exceeding the city’s ordinary limit of 125 feet.
Staples spokeswoman Amy Shanler said the company wants to be
sensitive to residents’ complaints, but also wants to make sure the
signs can be seen from Interstate 240.
