BREVARD — Students at Brevard College gathered outside the campus March 13 to protest what they said was censorship of a student-run newspaper by the school’s administration.
Administrators banned the new publication, the Pupil’s Underground, after its first issue featured profanity on its cover, including the “F word” in a photograph. It featured artwork, photography and poetry by students at BC.
One faculty member joined the protest. Geology professor Jim Reynolds
said he came out to support the students’ right to distribute the
publication.
Margaret Medley, one of the students involved in the demonstration,
said the use of profanity reflects the language of the students’
generation, but was not meant to harm anyone.
Meanwhile, the publication’s second edition was distributed outside the
school gates, where administrators have no jurisdiction.
