Buie
Kidnapping, rape charges filed against Asheville man

Asheville police officers have charged James McQueen Buie, 30, with first-degree kidnapping, first-degree rape and armed robbery following an incident that took place last Wednesday.

An employee of Mission Hospitals was kidnapped from the parking deck at knifepoint and forced to drive her car to an ATM machine.


Next, her attacker forced her to withdraw money and then drive him to an apartment building to buy crack cocaine, police reported.


The assailant then drove to a location off  Airport Road, where he raped her before taking her to another apartment building.


There, the victim escaped and drove her car to the hospital. She was able to provide a detailed description of the attacker, as well as the apartment he brought her to, leading police to arrest Buie.


Buie was being held at the Buncombe County Detention Facility under a $150,000 secured bond.


Man killed on motorcycle
in traffic detour on I-40

BLACK MOUNTAIN ?? A man was killed last Wednseday when his motorcycle collided with the back of a car on I-40.


James Michael Wheatcroft, 54, was killed at 7:10 a.m. when he failed to decrease speed in a traffic detour on the westbound lane. The detour was the result of a previous accident involving a tractor-trailer.


Wheatcroft, who lived at 6250 Bein Mountain Road, Nebo, died near mile marker 65, just east of Black Mountain.


The tractor-trailer had overturned about 5:48 a.m. and blocked traffic in both westbound lanes for two hours, according to police.


Retired Asheville teacher
drowns while swimming

SULLIVAN??S ISLAND, S.C. ?? A retired schoolteacher who once taught in Asheville, N.C., died on June 25 while swimming in the ocean off Sullivan??s Island.

Judy Kay Davidson, 55, was pulled underwater by rip currents in waist-high waters.


Three of her companions were also pulled under, but were rescued by emergency workers. Davidson??s body was found near a sandbar about half an hour after the incident.


Davidson moved to Mount Pleasant, S.C., in 2003, after having retired from her position as a teacher at Woodfin Elementary School.


She was a 1969 graduate from Erwin High School and held degrees from Mars Hill College and Western Carolina University.


A funeral service was held last Thursday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home on Patton Avenue.


Woodfin alderman resigns
following charges of DWI

WOODFIN ?? A member of the Woodfin Board of Alderman has resigned his post, following his arrest on charges of driving while impaired.

Alderman Ron Dayton submitted his resignation to Mayor Jerry VeHaun last month, following an incident on June 1, in which Dayton was stopped on U.S. 19/23 and charged with drunk driving.


Dayton was serving his second four-year term as alderman, following his re-election last November.


The board plans to appoint a new member to take his place early this month.



Baldwin
After daughter??s wedding, fugitive charged in slaying

A fugitive, who was wanted for murder, escorted his daughter down the aisle at her wedding in Kentucky just before he was arrested in West Asheville last Thursday.

Craig B. Baldwin, 57, was located and taken into custody, unarmed, and without incident at Rock Haven Motel at 1464 Patton Ave. His arrest was in connection with the homicide of Dale Baldwin, his 83-year-old mother in South Carolina.


Police believe she was slain on June 16 in her upscale Aiken neighborhood. Her body was found under bushes in her front yard.


Making the arrest was the Asheville Police Department??s Drug Suppression Unit, criminal investigation detectives and patrol officers.


Baldwin was placed in the custody of the US Marshal??s Fugitive Apprehension Task Force, who charged Baldwin with being a fugitive from justice.


Police declined to say how they learned that Baldwin was in Asheville. He was last seen at his daughter??s wedding in Lexington on June 24.


Baldwin was being held in the Buncombe County Dentention Facility without bond pending an extradition hearing and court appearance.


Detectives make arrest
in homicide investigation


Bryson
Kasean Damont Bryson was arrested last Friday by Asheville police detectives in connection with a homicide that occurred on Jan. 15.

He was a long-time suspect, police said,  and had been arrested initially in March as a ?®person of interest?∆ in the case.


Bryson, 26, of Livingston Street was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 58-year old Lawrence Neil Levi Jr.


The victim was shot on Jan. 15 inside his vehicle as he was leaving the Erskine/Livingston Street area on Victoria Road near Oakland Road.


Bryson also was charged with firing into an occupied vehicle and assaulting two men by firing a handgun with the intent to kill them.


In addition, he faces orders for arrest on reckless driving, two counts of hit-and-run property damage, three counts of driving while license revoked, speed violation, forgery of instrument, open container and two counts of resisting public officers.


Bryson is  being held in the Buncombe County Detention Facility without bond on the murder charge. The court set a $173,000 secured bond on the other charges.


Asheville police academy
graduates its second class

The Asheville Police Department??s Police Academy graduated its second class last Thursday at the Diana Wortham Theatre at Pack Place.

Nineteen individuals are poised to become officers, having completed their classroom studies.

They will now begin field training under the supervision of state-certified APD Field Training Officers for a period of about 80 days.
