Active Image A design by Jack Moon of Fairview won a contest to pick an unofficial Asheville flag.
His entry, featuring a view of the cityís skyline and mountains, garnered the most votes in the contest sponsored by Asheville Pizza & Brewing and WWNC-AM/570 radio station.
More than 27,000 on-line votes were cast in the contest to determine the finalists. Another 2,000 or so chose the winner. The votes came from around the region and all over the world, according to Brian Hall, director of news talk programming at Clear Channel Asheville, which owns WWNC. Hall said flag entries came from as far away as France, The Netherlands and California.
As the contest winner, Moon won a $500 cash prize and $200 in food from the pizzeria.
AP&B co-owner Mike Rangel plans to put the flag into production and offer it for sale.
The idea for an Asheville flag stemmed from Rangelís hope that citizens
would raise the flag at out-of-town festivals and concerts to promote
the city and bring together traveling Ashevillians.
