No. 10 Appalachian holds off
feisty Furman for 34-27 win
GREENVILLE, S.C. ó No. 10 Appalachian State University held off Furman University for a 34-27 victory in football last Saturday.
ASU (6-2, 2-2) scored on its first four possessions and amassed 251 yards of offense from quarterback Armanti Edwards in the first half.
However, Furman (3-5, 1-3), which was held to 110 yards in the first half, registered 292 yards of offense in the second half to threaten.
After blocking a field goal with 1:11 left, the Paladins advanced to
the Mountaineersí 28. Then, ASUís All-American safety Corey Lynch
snared an interception near the goal line on the gameís final play to
thwart the upset bid.
ASUís Edwards finished with 337 yards of offense, including 126 rushing
yards with two touchdowns, and 16-of-24 passing for 211 yards.
Next, ASU will visit The Citadel in Charleston at 2 p.m. Saturday.
MHC thrashes L-RC 39-13,
ends three-game losing skid
MARS HILL ó Following a bye week, Mars Hill College roared back into
action, ripping Lenoir-Rhyne College 39-13 in football during
homecoming at Meares Stadium last Saturday afternoon.
The win ended MHCís three-game losing streak after a 4-0 start of the
season. The outcome also gave the Lions their first South Atlantic
Conference victory of 2007.
MCH (5-3, 1-3) raced to a 26-7 halftime lead, bolstered by a 291-18
advantage in total yards. For the game, L-RC (2-7, 0-4) was held to 87
total yards ó 57 rushing and 30 passing.
The Lions scored on three of their first four drives, including a
7-yard run by Demario Zachery, a 29-yard catch by Travis Prince and a
20-yard run by Chappell Rose.
Leading MCHís offense were George Washington, who rushed for 159 yards
and a touchdown; Rose, who registered 104 rushing yards; and Chase
Harris, who kicked field goals of 24, 26 and 25 yards.
Next, MHC will visit Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn., at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
No. 13 Carson-Newman
has its way with BC 52-13
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. ó Carson-Newman College bombarded Brevard College 52-13 in football last Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles (8-1), ranked 13th nationally among NCAA Division II teams,
led 38-0 in the third quarter, when Tornados quarterback Trey Wilborn
ran for a 65-yard touchdown to put BC on the scoreboard.
The Tornados (2-7) scored their only other touchdown later in the third quarter on Donald Hudsonís 28-yard run.
Next, BC will host Catawba College at 2 p.m. Saturday at Brevard Highís stadium.
No. 11 Wofford withstands
WCU in monstrous 2nd half
CULLOWHEE ó Wofford College beat Western Carolina University 47-44 in a
nationally televised game at E.J. Whitmire Stadium/Bob Waters Field
last Thursday night.
WCU (1-8, 0-5) outscored 11th-ranked Wofford (7-2, 4-1) 41-10 in the
second half, in a monstrous comeback after intermission for the third
consecutive week, but fell once again.
The WCU receiving tandem of senior Eddie Cohen and red-shirt freshman
Marquel Pittman each eclipsed the 100-yard receiving mark with 124
yards and two touchdowns apiece to lead the second stanza charge
Next, WCU will take a week off before returning to action with a visit
to Appalachian State University at Boone at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 10.
The Alabama Lightning zapped the Asheville Grizzlies 17-7 to end the
latterís playoff run and the season in North American Football League
action at Ashevilleís Memorial Stadium last Saturday.
