Mocs thwart Catsí rally
in 3rd quarter for 39-21 win
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ó Western Carolina University staged a rally in the third quarter but Tennessee Chattanooga held on to win 39-21 at Finley Stadium last Saturday night.
Trailing 25-0 at halftime, the Catamounts narrowed the margin to 11 points at the end of the third quarter, but the Moccasins regained control in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard scoring run by Erroll Wynn to end the scoring.

The result marked the 11th straight Southern Conference defeat for WCU (1-6, 0-3), while Chattanooga improved to 2-4, 2-1.
Catamounts
quarterback Adam Hearns finished 17-of-40 for 265 yards with two
interceptions and one touchdown ó a 39-yard pass to receiver Eddie
Cohen, who grabbed six receptions for 109 yards. In addition, Willie
Harper scored WCUís last touchdown on a 4-yard run.
Another highlight for the Catamounts was back Mike Maloneís
surpassing of the 2,000-yard mark for career kickoff returns. He became
the second player in WCU history to achieve that mark. Kerry Hayes
(1991-94) was the first. Malone amassed 102 yards on five first-half
returns, but finished with just 140 all-purpose yards.
Next, WCU will host the Citadel at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Indians scalp Lions 48-24
as MHC drops 3rd in row
NEWBERRY, S.C. ó Newberry College ripped Mars Hill College 48-24 last Saturday night.
The Indians scored 21 points in the first quarter and led by 25 points at halftime.
MHC (4-3, 0-3) suffered three turnovers in the Lions third
consecutive loss ó all conference matchups ó after starting the season
with a 4-0 record.
The Lions were led by George Washington, who gained 161 yards on
28 carries; and Demario Zachery, who snatched six passes for 104 yards.
Next, MHC will have an open week before returning to action at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 27, when the Lions will host Lenoir-Rhyne College.
Tusculum whips BC 30-7; Tornadoesí offense struggles
BREVARD ó Tusculum College stomped Brevard College 30-7 at Brevard Highís Memorial Stadium last Saturday night.
BC (1-6) avoided its first shutout of the season with a
fourth-quarter touchdown, when Donald Hudson ran in from 2 yards out,
capping an 11-play, 75-yard drive.
Tusculum (4-3) amassed 337 yards of offense in the first half to
lead 21-0 at halftime. The Pioneers finished with 618 yards of offense,
while limiting the Tornadoes to 193 total yards.
BC running back John Taylor netted 64 yards on 13 carries, while
the remainder of the Tornadoes offense gained 129 yards of offense. BC
amassed only 14 yards in the air, as quarterback Colby McCoy finished
3-for-10.
ASU, Georgia-Southern
to battle in Boone Saturday
BOONE ó After a bye week, fifth-ranked Appalachian State
University will return to action at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, when the
Mountaineers host Georgia-Southern in a Southern Conference clash at
Kidd Brewer Stadium.
The game will be televised regionally on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network.
Grizzlies defeat Tiger-Cats
to advance in NAFL playoffs
The Asheville Grizzlies beat the Macon Tiger-Cats 22-14 in the
first round of the North American Football League playoffs at Memorial
Stadium last Saturday.
Next, the Grizzlies will host the winner of the playoff game
between the Atlanta Generals and the Augusta Raging Bulls in the second
round of the playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
