CULLOWHEE ó Senior tailback Mike Malone rushed for a career-best 105 yards and two touchdowns while his backfield classmate Todd Spitzer threw for a career-high 239 yards on 19 completions, as Western Carolina snapped its 12-game losing skid with a 33-20 win over Presbyterian in football at E.J. Whitmire Stadium/Bob Waters Field Saturday night.
For the Catamounts, the win snapped a 12-game losing streak. WCU last won on Sept. 16, 2006, when it edged Eastern Kentucky 20-17 in Cullowhee.
Eight Catamounts caught passes, led by sophomore Marquel Pittman who
hauled in a career-best seven passes for 107 yards, including a long
catch of 42 yards, while red-shirt sophomore Marcus Brown tallied his
first career touchdown on a 16-yard strike.
In addition, WCU running back Mike Maone rushed for 105 yards and two
touchdowns on 24 carries ó the first time the senior topped the
100-yard mark; while quarterback Todd Spitzer finished 19-for-31
passing for 239 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. Spitzer also
ran for a 1-yard touchdown in the final minute.
Next, WCU will open Southern Conference play at 3:30 p.m. Saturday as
it visits Georgia Southern at Paulson Stadium in Statesboro, Ga. The
game will be broadcast by Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast.
