GREENVILLE, S.C. ó† The Greenville Drive beat the Asheville Tourists 6-4 in the rgular-season finale in front of 6,675 fans on Monday night.
Greenville took the lead permanently in the eighth inning when Jon Egan scored on a wild pitch by reliever Simon Ferrer (7-11), who took the loss. Ferrer allowed two runs on two hits in three innings.
In other recent Touristsí baseball action:
ï The Tourists scored three runs in the ninth inning to break a 2-2 tie
and defeat the Drive 5-2 in front of 6,675 fans last Sunday afternoon.
Recording the win was reliever Zach Simons (8-2), who allowed no runs
on one hit in two innings. At the plate, Asheville was led by Bret
Berglund, who finished 1-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored; and
Jay Cox, who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
ï Asheville pummelled Greenville 11-4 in front of 5,576 fans in
Greenville last Saturday night. The Touristsí victory was keyed by a
five-run seventh inning that included home runs by Bret Berglund and
Hector Gomez. Registering the win was starter Keith Weiser (17-7), who
allowed four runs on 12 hits in eight innings. He struck out eight and
walked none.
ï The Tourists finished their 2007 home schedule on a losing note,
dropping both games of a shortened doubleheader ó 6-5 and 14-4 ó
against the Hickory Crawdads at McCormick Field last Friday night.
Attendance at the games was 3,803 and 4,192 fans (a sellout and
season-high), respectively. For the season the team drew the
second-highest attendance ó 164,910 ó in team history, trailing only
last yearís sum of 167,745. Taking the loss in the first game was
reliever Casey Weathers (0-1), who allowed three runs on two hits in
one inning. In the second game, starter Esmil Rogers (7-4) allowed six
runs on 11 hits in 3-1/3 innings. At the plate, Matt Repec led the
Tourists, swatting three home runs in the double-header.
ï In a pitching duel, Hickory nipped Asheville 2-0 in front of 2,309
fans in Hickory on Aug. 28. Despite firing 11 strikeouts, starter
Aneury Rodriguez (9-9), who allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits
in seven innings, was saddled with the loss. Of the Touristsí five
total hits, Geoff Strickland smacked two of them in four at-bats.
ï The Crawdads topped the Tourists 8-5 in front of 1,917 fans at
Hickory on Aug. 27. Hickory raced to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and
never relinquished the lead. Taking the loss for Asheville was starter
Andy Graham (10-10), who allowed seven runs on 10 hits in four innings.
At the plate, the Tourists were led by Michael McKenry, who finished
3-for-5, with one RBI and one run.
