ANN ARBOR, Mich. ó Pulling off one of the biggest upsets in college football history, Appalachian State University opened the season by vanquishing mighty Michigan 34-32 in front of 110,000 mostly Wolverine fans last Saturday.
Julian Rauch kicked a 24-yard field goal with 26 seconds left to put ASU ahead. Then, in the final seconds, Corey Lynch blocked a field goal to seal the upset victory.
Michigan has the nationís winningest football program, but ASU appeared to offset a slight size disadvantage with superior speed and more passion.
Despite being ahead 28-14 late in the second quarter, the Mountaineers
appeared to be collapsing as the Wolverines scored nine points in the
third quarter and a go-ahead touchdown with 4:36 left. Moreover, on the
first snap after the touchdown, Michiganís Brandent Englemon
intercepted a pass, but then had the first of two late field goals
blocked.
ASU then staged a 69-yard drive without a timeout to set up a go-ahead
field goal. Michigan moved the ball to the Mountaineersí 20 with six
seconds left. Lynch blocked the potential game-winning kick and
returned it 52 yards to the 18 as the final seconds ticked off the
clock.
ASU, which has won 15 consecutive games, the longest streak in the
nation, is favored to win the Football Championship Subdivision,
formerly the I-AA. The Mountaineers are the two-time I-AA defending
champions.
No Division I-AA team has beaten a team ranked in The Associated Press poll from 1989 to 2006.
Next, ASU will host Lenoir-Rhyne at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone.
