WOODFIN ó The town ABC store will no longer be able to serve chilled drinks to go.
The state Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission ruled recently that the new store was in violation of state rules, which do not authorize the town to sell chilled liquor.
The store opened July 19 on U.S. 19-23-25-70 with a number of features intended to draw customers in, including a freezer for vodka and other liquors.
The storeís freezer reportedly became a topic of conversation at a
convention of local ABC officials at the Grove Park Inn a few days
after the store opened.
That conversation prompted State ABC Administrator Mike Herring to
write a letter to Town Administrator Jason Young informing him that the
store was not authorized to refrigerate liquor. Young is also the
storeís acting manager.
Woodfin ABC officials said they decided to comply with the order rather
than get into a dispute with the state because they hope for easier
approval when they want to open a second store.
While Young said the town has no plans to open another store in Woodfin
any time soon, it is bidding, along with Asheville, to operate a store
for Weaverville.
