Tourists ignite for five runs in 7th to rip GreenJackets

AUGUSTA, Ga. ó Sparked by a career-high three doubles by Bret Berglund, the Asheville Tourists scored five runs in the seventh inning to surge past the Augusta GreenJackets 7-4 in front of 1,431 fans on Sunday.

Asheville trailed 4-2 entering the seventh inning, when Berglund doubled and later scored on Geoff Stricklandís two-out triple. Hector Gomez and Daniel Mayora then smacked RBI singles, followed by Michael McKenryís two-run home run, his 21st of the season.

Registering the win was starter Keith Weiser (16-7), who allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits in seven innings. Weiser also issued four walks and struck out five batters. Earning his second save of the season was reliever Casey Weathers, who struck out one in a a perfect ninth inning.

ï The Tourists nipped the GreenJackets 2-1 in front of 3,944 fans in Augusta, Ga., last Saturday night. Asheville jumped to a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI ground out from Geoff Strickland that enabled Matt Repec, who earlier smashed a triple, to score from third. The Tourists led 2-0 in the sixth inning after Repec hit a double and scored when Daniel Mayora smacked a single with two outs. Augusta scored its run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Taking the win was starter Esmil Rogers (7-3), who allowed one run on five hits in seven innings. He struck out six batters.

ï Augusta edged Asheville 4-3 in front of 3,949 fans in Augusta last Friday night. The GreenJackets led 2-1 after the first inning and added two runs in the seventh. However, the Tourists staged a comeback, scoring two runs in the eighth, but they were unable to overcome the remaining one-run deficit. Taking the loss was starter Josh Sullivan (3-2), who allowed two runs on two hits in five innings.

ï Mike Grace smacked a solo home run in the seventh inning to break a 6-6 tie to spark the Intimidators to a 10-7 win over the Tourists at McCormick Field last Thursday night. Kannapolis added two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to pad the margin. Meanwhile, Asheville added a run in the eighth, when Victor Ferrante smacked a triple and later scored on a Hector Gomez RBI-groundout. Taking the loss for Asheville was reliever Andrew Kreidermacher (2-2), who allowed three runs on seven hits in two innings.

ï Brandon Allen settled a seesaw scoring battle by smashing a three-run homer in the fifth inning to lift Kannapolis over† Asheville 9-7 in front of 2,647 fans at McCormick Field last Wednesday night. Recording the loss was starter Aneury Rodriguez (9-8), who allowed eight runs on nine hits in five innings. He fanned six batters and gave up no walks. At the plate for the Tourists, Michael McKenry hit a team-leading 18th home run ó a three-run shot ó in the fourth inning. Ashevilleís Hector Gomez finished 2-for-4, with a home run, two RBIs and a walk. However, Gomez inadvertantly dealt a fatal blow to his teamís hopes for a win when he got picked off trying to steal third base with two-on and two-out in the bottom of the sixth ó with the hot-hitting McKenry at the plate.

ï The Tourists ripped the Intimidators 11-3 in front of 2,626 fans at McCormick field on Aug. 21. Taking the win was starter Keith Weiser (15-7), the Touristsí top pitcher, who allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits in six innings. Asheville scored four runs in the first inning and led 8-0 after four innings. In the same span, Kannapolis committed four errors while scoring three runs. At the plate, the Tourists were led by Daniel Mayors, who finished 4-for-5 with three doubles and three RBIs. As a team, Asheville smacked six doubles among its 12 hits.
