Tourists stage comeback to defrock Captains 11-7

The Asheville Tourists rallied to top the Lake County Captains 11-7 in front of 2,283 fans at McCormick Field on Sunday afternoon.

Sparking the comeback was Touristsí utility infielder Spence Nagy, who smacked a double that drove in two runs during Ashevilleís six-run offensive eruption in the sixth inning.

The Tourists trailed 6-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, when they scored two runs. In the sixth, following Nagyís double, Anthony Jackson hit a two-run single. Leading 8-7, Asheville added one insurance run in the seventh on a Matt Repec RBI double, followed by consecutive hits by Hector Gomez and Daniel Mayora to drive in two more runs in the eighth inning. Mayora finished 4-for-5 with a home run and two RBIS.

Getting the win was reliever Zach Simons (7-2), who allowed one run on one hit ó a solo home run in the fifth ó in two innings.

In other recent Touristsí baseball action:

ï The Hagerstown Suns avoided a four-game series sweep by beating Asheville 6-2 in front of 3,127 fans at McCormick Field last Saturday night. The Suns scored three runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Earlier, Daniel Mayora and Matt Repec slammed solo home runs in the first and second innings, respectively, to account for the Touristsí scoring. Asheville starter Andy Graham (10-8), allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings. He struck out six batters to remain the teamís strikeout leader (126 in 23 games).

ï The Tourists took first place alone by ripping the Suns 8-1 in front of 3,277 fans at McCormick Field last Friday night. Southpaw Keith Weiser (14-6) won his league-leading 14th game, allowing one run on three hits in seven innings. He struck out six. He received offensive support from Victor Ferrante and Jay Cox, who hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning. Ferrante also swatted a two-run shot in the fifth. The Tourists amassed 16 hits to win their third straight game over the last-place Suns (14-33).

ï Asheville regained first place in its division by beating Hagerstown 6-1 in front of 3,623 fans at McCormick Field last Thursday night. Geoff Strickland led the offense, including patiently earning two walks and scoring each time, giving Asheville an early 2-0 lead. He later smacked a lead-off home run in the seventh inning, staking the Tourists to a 4-1 lead. Asheville added two insurance runs in the eighth inning to finish the scoring. Also swatting solo shots were Matt Repec and Michael McKenry, the latter of whom has a team-leading 14 homers. Jay Cox finished 3-for-4, while Michael Paulk extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the first inning. Registering the win was starter Esmil Rogers (6-2), who allowed one run on six hits in seven innings. Ashevilleís victory, coupled with Charlestonís loss, propelled the Tourists into first place in the South Atlantic League Southern Division.

ï The Tourists eclipsed the Hagerstown Suns 6-0 in front of 2,836 fans at McCormick Field last Wednesday night. Registering the win was starter Simon Ferrer (7-8), a knuckleballer who scattered four hits in six scoreless innings. He struck out seven, including five of the first seven batters he faced. Asheville scored first, when Matt Repec smacked a double in the second inning to score Michael McKenry. The Tourists added five runs in the fifth, beginning the inning with a double and ending it with a groundout. Asheville was led by McKenry, who finished 2-for-3 with a double, one run scored and two RBIs.

ï The Delmarva ShoreBirds scored a run in the ninth inning to nip Asheville 5-4 in front of 3,394 fans in Salisburg, Md., on Aug. 6. Taking the loss was reliever Tommy Baumgardner (3-2), who committed two throwing errors to allow one run on no hits in the ninth inning. At the plate, Asheville was led by Mike Paulk, who finished 3-for-4, with two RBIs.
