Tiger Woods, the top-ranked golfer in the world who won the PGA this past weekend, has signed a contract to develop his first United States golf course at The Cliffs at High Carolina, off Interstate 40 in Fairview, according to Golf.comís Web site.
Cliffs Communities sent out invitations two weeks ago, stating that it and Woods would ìpresentî a press event this past Tuesday, but did not give details.
The news conference was to be held at Cliffs Valley in Travelers
Rest, S.C. Woods reportedly confirmed on Aug. 7 that he would be at the
event. Woods owns ETW Corp., based in Orlando, Fla.
The course, between Fairview and Swannanoa, would be Woodsí
first design in the U.S. His design company is building its first
course in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, that will be ready for play in
2009.
Woods would be another prominent name involved with golf courses
in the Cliffs Communities. Jack Nicklaus designed the Walnut Cove
course in Arden and the Keowee Falls course in South Carolina.
Other golfing greats designing new golf course developments in
Western North Carolina include Arnold Palmer, Phil Mickelson and Tom
Kite, as well as famed architect Tom Fazio.
The area already claims more than 50 quality golf courses.
