Grasshoppers hand Tourists 2nd straight one-run loss

The Greensboro Grasshoppers jumped the Asheville Tourists 6-5 in baseball in front of 2,299 fans at McCormick Field last Monday night.

In its second one-run defeat, Asheville (31-32) had a chance to pull out a win in the ninth inning, with the bases loaded, but first baseman Michael Paulk hit a grounder that was turned into a double play to end the game.


Zach Simons (5-5) took the defeat for Asheville, allowing 10 hits, six runs and two walks in 5-1/3 innings. He struck out three.



 
Greenville edges Asheville 6-5 as comeback falls short

The Greenville Drive flattened the Asheville Tourists 6-5 in baseball in front of 3,511 fans at McCormick Field last Saturday.


Trailing 6-3 in the ninth, Asheville (31-31) staged a two-run rally, but unlike the previous night, the effort was insufficient to overcome the deficit.


Taking the loss for the Tourists was starter Alan Johnson (5-3), who allowed seven hits, five runs and two walks in six innings. He struck out six.


Asheville shortstop Chris Nelson finished 2-for-4 with two doubles.


Tourists win with two runs
in 11th inning to edge Drive

By scoring two runs in the bottom of the 11th inning, the Asheville Tourists nipped the Greenville Drive 5-4 in baseball in front of 3,474 fans at McCormick Field last Friday.


Ironically, the winning score in the hard-fought clash occurred on a bases-loaded walk by catcher Kyle Blumenthal.


However, a highlight for the Tourists came in the bottom of the ninth, when the team smacked three consecutive hits, including two doubles, to score two runs and send the 3-3 game into extra innings.

The Drive (32-29) added a run in the 11th, but the Tourists retaliated with two runs in the bottom of the inning to win.

Getting the win for Asheville was reliever Chad Bailey (1-0), who allowed one hit and struck out one batter in one-third inning at the end of the game.


Three home runs propel
Kannapolis past Asheville

KANNAPOLIS ?? The last-place Kannapolis Intimidators smacked three home runs to top the Asheville Tourists 7-4 in baseball at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium last Wednesday.


Tourists starter Zach Simons (5-4) allowed three home runs in 3-1/3 innings. In all, he allowed seven hits, seven runs and three walks.


First baseman Chris Cook led Asheville on offense, with two hits and an RBI. Catcher Nelson Robledo drove in two runs.

Intimidators over Tourists

KANNAPOLIS ?? With solid pitching, the Kannapolis Intimidators beat the Asheville Tourists 4-1 in baseball at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on June 6.


Intimidators starter Clayton Richard allowed one run and struck out 11 in seven innings.


Xavier Cedeno (3-4) took the loss for the Tourists.


At the plate, Asheville (29-29) was led by right fielder Daniel Carte, who finished 2-for-4 with a double; and catcher Kyle Blumenthal, who also went 2-for-4.


Asheville rips Kannapolis
8-2 with balanced attack

KANNAPOLIS ?? Behind a balance of hitting and pitching, the Asheville Tourists ripped the Kannapolis Intimidators 8-2 in baseball on June 5.


Asheville scored three runs apiece in the first and third innings and added two runs in the ninth.

Tourists starter Alan Johnson (5-2) allowed five hits and two runs in eight innings.

At the plate, Asheville was led by outfielder Travel Becktel, who finished 4-for-5; and Daniel Carte, who went 2-for-5.


Three Tourists players,
two hurlers named all stars

Three players and two pitchers for the Asheville Tourists were named to play in the South Atlantic League All-Star game on June 20 at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio.


The players include outfielder Dexter Fowler, shortstop Chris Nelson and second baseman Eric Young Jr., while the pitchers are Brandon Durden and David Patton.


Fowler, who had a .306 batting average through June 5, has led the Tourists in batting throughout most of the first half of the season. As of June 5, he had a team-leading four triples.


Nelson was tied early last week with Fowler for the team lead with 14 doubles and had a .290 batting average.


Young has led the minor leagues in stolen bases throughout the first half of the season. He had 42 thefts as of June 5, along with 13 doubles and three triples.


As of last Wednesday, Durden had a 3-1 record with a 2.92 ERA in 11 starts. He has 47 strikeouts in 61-2/3 innings.


Patton had a 3-1 record with a 2.28 ERA in 20 relief appearances, as of last Wednesday. He has tallied 24 strikeouts in in 23-2/3 innings.


Two WNC pitchers drafted
by Major League Baseball

Two Western North Carolina pitchers ?? Blaine Howell and Josh Thrailkill ?? were the first from the area to be selected in the 2006 Major League Baseball draft recently.


Tampa Bay selected Howell, a left-hander from Reynolds High, with the 739th overall pick in the 25th round.


Thrailkill, a right-hander from Roberson High, was chosen by Philadelphia as the 1,027th pick in the 34th round.


Howell finished this year with a 9-1 record, a 1.14 ERA and 94 strikeouts.


Thrailkill??s record was 11-4, with a 1.19 ERA and 114 strikeouts.
