Gunman opens fire on crowd at community center; 3 suffer injuries
Wednesday, 25 July 2007 17:27

A gunman opened fire in a crowded recreation center last Monday, wounding three people and causing the Mission Hospitals emergency department to be locked down while police searched for the attacker.
No one was killed in the attacks and all three people who suffered injuries were released from the hospital later that night, officials said.

One of the victims was a woman who is seven months pregnant. She was shot in the thigh while working out in the weight room.

The shooting took place about 6:30 p.m. at the Stephens-Lee Recreation Center, a popular community gathering place.

The attacker reportedly entered the center with his face and head covered, possibly by a T-shirt, and began firing a handgun. About 70 people were using the center at the time of the shooting, police said.
As the gunman fled the scene of the crime, someone else followed him out of the center and fired about eight shots at him.

Officials have not identified a motive or whether the gunman was trying to target specific individuals.
Among the victims was 25-year-old Akiba Plummer, who was shot in the thigh. The other victimsí names were not released by officials.

Police brought in dogs to try to pick up the trail of the attacker, but investigators have given only a vague description of him and have not said how many shots were fired.

Mission Hospitals were put on lockdown until the victims left, as per a company policy to close off the hospital whenever there is a threat to patients or staff.

City officials noted that the center has seen relatively little violence over the years and does not have security.

It is open to the public and houses facilities for basketball, classrooms and outside playground areas. Monday nights are typically busy there, attracting 25 to 35 people, the centerís director, Allison Dains, said.
